UPDATE: I am looking deeper and deeper into this situation. Verisign is showing the same data whois.sc is showing, Parava.net is showing 2017 as the expiry date. One thing that could be happening here is that Parava.net might not of paid the renewal fees to Verisign after my friend paid for the renewal, which was a good deal of time ago (Month or more)….. Looking more into it now….
I keep an eye on one of my friends domain names and monitor it with DRT. Now DRT must use www.Whois.sc or a very similar service to gain access to the whois info for domain names that you scan. I also use whois.sc daily and "had" full trust in the service until recently.
My friend owns a very valuable Quad Premium .com domain (cccp.com) and it kept showing me when I ran scans that the domain was 60 days away from expiring, but my friend kept telling me he renewed the domain until 2017, so it couldn’t be expiring. So I checked and checked whois.sc again, and it still showed 2008 as it’s expire date. I thought, well, maybe it’s showing me cached data? So I waited a couple days and checked again. Same stuff. Waited a couple more days, same thing.
The fact: Whois.sc is showing Wrong Info!
Now when you check a domain using a whois service, if you want the most accurate whois info, you HAVE to check whois at the domains registrar! Now whois.sc shows they are pulling their info from the registrars whois, but what happens if the source is not correct?
This is what happened for this domain…. The domain is registered with Parava.net and they changed their whois provider, so whois.sc is still trying to grab data from whois.parava.net which is wrong. So now, For domain names registered with ICANN Registrar: PARAVA NETWORKS INC DBA REGISTRATEYA.COM NAAME.COM whois.sc is grabbing whois info from whois.parava.net but if you manually go to whois.parava.net it’s a dead page. The info provided is Wrong as Parava.net is using a new whois system other then listed on whois.sc . The new whois they use is http://www.10-domains.com/checkwhoisinfo.asp which displays that the domain does not expire until 2017 as it should.
So next time you are thinking of trusting the whois data on whois.sc, you might think twice
Also, you might want to check who provides whois data for "other" services you use as well.
