Domaining Time Management

Archived in the category: Domain News

Time management is one of the hardest things no matter what business you are in! I have been full-time domaining for years now and I do not have a clue how a part time domainer could even survive in the domain industry. The domain industry seems to change daily, if not hourly and keeping up with the times is a job in itself.

Companies are purchased, services change, new sites open and domain names are being sold by the second. Fewwww

I run a three man show (Me, Myself and I) and have been getting into more and more things. Buying more domains from more and more places, development of domains and selling domains. Processes change daily (drops, searching, software), tools are added, free tools go to pay tools, discoveries (new ways of doing things or just new things) and so on.

So I start my day off at 4:30 am and "try" to stop by the time my wife comes home at 5 PM, but I have worked many days non stop until 11 or 12 at night. I love what I do, otherwise there is simply no way I could or would do it daily.

So today I was thinking of Time Management. What is working, what is not? Have you asked yourself that lately? If not, you might want to do a check and see what’s working and what is not. I have started a list and will be checking these items often to see how things are working. I also created another list on things that I want to try. So this all is pointing to time management. Adding new things and take away the things that are not working.

I have a new site/service that will greatly help myself and many other domainers with time management and this web based tool will also help you not miss out on investments. More to come on this shortly. ;)

So in my list I layed out what Most of my hours in my short days are sucked up by. Researching domain name lists for auctions and drops takes up most of it. This blog sucks up a good deal of time, bidding on domains at auctions, renewals, parking management, checking blogs/forums and consulting with other domainers. That’s my day in a nut shell.

I have Really lowered my hours on domain forums to help time management already, since DotWeekly started taking up more time. I know I need a tool/software to help weed the domain lists. DRT software Really helps, but I still need more. This is a big focal point. Auction Management is another big focal point. It seems new auction sites are added monthly and I hate to miss out on a good deal…

So be sure to ask yourself, What’s working and what’s not! Do some time management weeding, so you can start trying some new things or allow some more time to dig deeper into more important things that Are Working.

Happy Domaining!

Doing this part-time reduces the urgency to sell domains but it means there is no time to develop anything and the focus has been on acquisitions. Perhaps many domainers should reduce the time devoted to acquisitions, switch gears and focus more on marketing their inventory.

Acquisitions are key for me. The more quality inventory that I have the better. Even though this is my full time job, I am in no rush to sell any of my domain names. Setting yourself up over time, will help people get in this situation. When I first started out, I was in a rush to sell, but not any more. Some people can sell 1-3 domains a Year and still make 6 figures. :) One reason I love domaining some much.

Hi Jamie,

I know exactly what you mean re: time management and domaining. Regarding this new site/service, I assume you already have a domain, but if not, you might want to consider making an offer on one we own: TimeManagementSkills.com. Regards, Bob

Thank you Bob. Yes, I had a domain sitting around that I used. It will be a one word generic and I should be able to reveal it soon. I hope within a couple of days, but I am Very excited about this one.

If you’re able to share, what finally enabled you to get into full time domaining versus part-time? Was there a sale that took you over the top? Anyway, if you can share, I’m sure small time domainers (like myself and friends) would love to know the key. Thanks!

I was offered a buy-out from my company that I worked at (P&G). I was domaining part-time while I was working their. It was a big risk, but paid off. With any business adventrue, it comes with risk. I would advise to start out domaining part-time, taste the waters and see how it goes. If you really think you can do it, Go For It! Hope this helps a little.

Would you mind talking to my wife about how this is working out just fine for you? :)

my biggest problem is reading blogs and message boards instead of doing actual work. This sentence, case in point….

Thanks for sharing! Taking that leap is a big risk, but it’s always nice to hear a success story. Please keep sharing your personal successes
