I find it pretty funny, but it seems about once or twice a month I get offers on domain names I no longer own. It’s not because I am trying to sell domains I do not own but when the new owner get’s the domain, they simply forget or just do not change the domain name servers.
I guess I could go in and remove the for sale link at the the parking provider, but that’s time I do not currently have. I could also just remove the domain, but that doesn’t really make that much sense to me… If the new owner doesn’t change the dns, your domain you sold will continue to get traffic if it did before. Traffic over time leads to clicks, which turns to cash.
When I do get these offers, I make sure to provide the interested party with a direct link with whois so they can find the current owner. I think that is the right thing to do. I also make sure I remove the domain from Afternic and Sedo if I have it listed. I do not park domains with them currently so my DNS will nearly always be with Fabulous.com or NameDrive.com with some older domains that I owned.
I still have domains that I sold over 3 years ago in my account at NameDrive.com that still make money on PPC and I have not owned them for 3 years. Do I feel bad about this? No. It’s the new owners fault they never changed DNS. The owner never submitted the domain via ND, or it would of been removed from my account. Fresh registrations can get traffic as well and if no DNS is changed, the registrar will be making the money, so why can’t I on domains that I owned.
So be sure to change your DNS when you purchase your domain so you do not miss out on any parking revenue or offers.
