Google Trends can make a domainer laugh and Cry!

Archived in the category: Domain News

Google Trends can sure make a domainer laugh and show strong proof that web users do not understand Domain Names or Direct Navigation. Today while looking at the current typed in trends via Google, it just makes me laugh my ass off that somebody would "search for something they already know"!

If you think about that, that’s funny as Hell! Searching for something they already know! Here are some examples.

#17 "fellonspy.com"  That is the 17th most search term today on Google.com according to Google Trends.  So this means that people are typing in fellonspy.com into googles search box. I have to assume the intent of the searcher is to "find" fellonspy.com. I wonder how they "found" Google to do the search? LOL

Direct Navigation! If you want to find FellonSpy.com, just type in FellonSpy.com into your browser instead of Google.com! You will find it nearly Instantly! If you do not know what a "browser" is, it’s the little e you click on to "get on the internet". The little "white box" at the top that you type in http://www.dotweekly.com, that is what is used for "direct navigation". You will be taken "directly" to the web address you enter. Google.com is a web address, aka Domain Name. Their can Only Be One Google.com, so when you type Google.com, you will not end up at "another" Google.com if you "search" for it at Google.com. If you want to go to FellonSpy.com, just type in the white box at the top of your browser, www.fellonspy.com and hit enter/go. Why waste your time going to google.com to find something you already know you want to go to? With all the time you save using direct navigation, you might get the 8 hours of sleep you always wanted!

Some more examples of people losing valuable time in their day!

#27 "msn.com sign in" Why not just go to www.msn.com and to the right of Welcome, click the Sign in link? Do you really need to go to www.google.com click the search box, then type msn.com sign in, hit enter wait for the results, then click a "result"? Seems easier to go to  Msn.com..

#49 "aol.com mail" Again, www.aol.com and the nice little box on the top left side of the screen that say’s Mail.

Here is a little more "stupid" to see….

#53 "yahoo.com mail" Once again, www.yahoo.com right side of the screen. Just click Mail…

#60 "weather.com local code" Just go to www.weather.com right on the top, enter in your zip code. You will get exactly what you are looking for…

#62 "drudge.com" Ahhhh just type Drudge.com or www.drudge.com into your browser!

#98 "hotmail.com msn" Try Hotmail.com or simply msn.com. Either will get you exactly what you want.

Being a domain owner and seeing these searches at SE’s can make you cry. At least make you feel like crying.  Maybe one day these searches will start using more then the 10% of brains they use now and figure out they are Searching For Something They Already Know!

Jamie,

You have too much faith in humanity :-))

Most people barely survive in this world as it is and hoping they resolve their search techniques is way beyond anything possible. Maybe 10% of people see the world and understand the way it is - the other 90% think of Paris Hilton when they hear the word Paris (it’s a city in france), gossip at the water coolers about the biggest loser and … shet, I could go on….

Logic comes from Math - how many people you know still need a calculator to do simple math….

Don’t look at these stats - they will only get worse as more people get online… sad, but true.

But, hey you made me laugh … so all is good.

Jamie,

I’ve watched my wife do the following at least 20 times.

1. Open the browser and wait for Google to load.
2. Type Yahoo.com in the Google search bar.
3. Click on the Yahoo.com search result.
4. Arrive at Yahoo and login to check her mail.

At minimum, I’ve showed her 3 times the quickest way to do this. I’ve even bookmarked the Yahoo Mail login screen for her. Doesn’t matter, she continues to do what comes naturally to her.

**Jamie Says**
Sounds like it’s time for a new wife Bill. J/K I guess some people are just stuck in the way they do things.

Same experiences here. At work I’ve seen many people type domain names in msn’s search. Seriously…. msn.com.

I’ve seen someone type in imdb.com into msn’s search. I’ve seen someone type in espn.com into msn’s search.

I’ve asked them why they did it, and they say “its just easier” since msn is the default home page (that they never change). And this isn’t just older people, these people are in their lower 20s and aren’t completely tech-ignorant.

I suspect this is quite common in workplaces.

I know this doesn’t account for ALL the useless searches but I can tell ya Firefox is a bit culpable for some of these “url searches”.

If Google is the selected search engine in Firefox and a url is present on a page (a url not a link) then it is actually faster to highlight the url text, right-click and choose “search google for”. Then Google gives you a link to click (the 1st result).

IE probably does this too but I wouldn’t know because anyone that uses that browser is asking for a virus.

I dont know about other countries but here in UK people using Firefox tend to make google search as their home page.
So when Firefox loads you see the google search bar as your home page and people type-in the domainname.com in their google search bar.
Agreed people are stupid but that accounts for the loss in direct type-in traffic.

People just dont seem to be thinking now a days.

Hello. I always try to do not judge people’s knowledge on techy things like that. There are MANY people out there that internet is just a needed pain. Children or seniors for instance… even those who just hate new trends (there are still many hippies out there).

They just use the browser the way they learned to use it and that’s enough form them. It has always worked for them and that’s the important… I bet that if they try to enter the address in the right “white box”, they will end up in different places because of typos or stuff like that.

I’ve a very interesting experience with my wife which is a 8 year-old teacher: Many years ago I bought a domain for her. It was her name in diminutive. Well, many children just type in just her name in the address bar and they end up in a porn site (there’s no need to say I bought her a totally different domain for her, in no way related to her name). I bet that if those children just typed her name in google, the browser could have been filtered those porn sites or if they get throught, they could have been find her site because of its title.

Sometimes workarounds have its benefits.

Live longer.
