Some domain sales make me scratch my head

Archived in the category: Domain Help

I think most domain investors keep a pretty close eye on all reported domain name sales. NameBio.com, Sedo’s Home Page, DnJournal.com etc.

The one thing that I see a great deal of the time are simply domain names that I wouldn’t even register or think of buying. This many times makes me scratch my head and makes me think… Am I missing something? Am I investing in some wrong area’s? Should I just start buying "Whatever"?

The above is just a very small sample of domains reported sold on Sedo.com’s home page today. Now looking through These domain names, what would I have registered/purchased out of the group…

Euro-Pack.com No, I do not own any Hypenated domain names. I think the lone good thing about them is for SEO.

Incognito.net Maybe, but I would not pay that much for it.

SexBot.com No, this domain doesn’t make a ton of sense to the common person. It did sell for $12K, but I think Traffic played a bigger part to this then the keywords in the domain.

PrivacyService.com Heck Yah! Great domain and I would of paid the $1,655 it sold for. Great domain with Very Clear meaning! I think this was a Steal Really!

Slow.com Yes! Not 100% on how to cash in on the domain at $42K. Computer upgrades or something like that. 4 letter dictionary terms are a no brainer really!

GlobalWallet.com No! Doesn’t make sense to me. Makes me scratch my head more at $6K, but somebody has a plan for it and they thought $6K was a fair price.

SpencerCounty.com Maybe! 13 daily searches for the term but I personally wouldn’t pay much for it. Somebody living in or near Spencer County would be more interested in this domain then me.

Simplify-It.com No! Hypenated domain, never owned one! It’s a common term, but I wouldn’t think it’s a heavily searched term.

Elain.com Yes! It’s a first name and a typo of a first name (e at the end).

Londons.co.uk No! Never owened a .co.uk due to all the paperwork.

Choosable.com Yes! But I really have never had any luck with dictionary term words that end in able.

1888.net Yes! It’s a history year, triple 8’s which is a lucky number in china etc. Anytime you have multipul good things going for a domain name helps me decide to buy or not.

Meagan.com Yes! Great domain being a very common girls first name!

So 5 No’s, 2 maybe’s and 6 yes, which really means I would of most likely missed out on 7 of 13 sales… That’s not a great number for ME. I still will not change what I buy, but I might think outside the box a little more and start buying some more questionable domains that I had second thoughts about before. Domains like SpencerCounty.com are safe buys, but I passed them before. I will still not buy Hypenated domains, but clearly there is some market for them. Dictionary terms are nearly Always safe buys in the .com, .net and .org TLD’s. I will also continue buying two word combo’s that Make Sense. GlobalWallet.com may make sense to some, but not to me. GlobalMarket.com yes, InternationalExchange.com yes, ForeignExchange.com yes..

I did really see anything in this group that jumped at me and said BUY, but it really depends on what You are looking for and what you plan on doing with it.

simplify-it.com is a half million dollar plus name to an end user as a blog name or call to action for ad. By end users I am talking about multi-billion software companies like Citrix, IBM and Microsoft- in fact go here and look at the “simplify IT” tab represents multi-billion licensing revenue from the desktops of almost all of the Fortune 500. The dash DOES help for SEO and because it’s used internally and linked from pages like our blogs are linked from domaining, it’s not the dash- but the name which describes a benefit to the reader that matters. Tagged onto an AdWords ad seen in Google or adjacent to an article as the URL rather then the brand name, this can have enormous impact. In the end it’s about knowing end users and needs which is not going to be factored into typical domain appraisals but can only come from first hand experience and insight.

Thank you for the post Owen and several great points. I guess I am just not a fan of the hypen. When I see one on search engines, I do not even click because 9 time out of 10, the site is full of ads and no relevent content. If I see MakeMoney.com or Make-Money.com right next to each other.. I’d be clicking the one with no hypen, because it’s a premium domain and I know from the start, They Mean Business!

The $value and value in general of a domain name is in the hands of the person wanting to buy it VS selling it.

Domain name appraisals (espec. the paid one) are a waste of money - spend the money in registering domain names instead.

Simply put, “one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.” Sometimes, it is not even about keywords or traffic; it’s about a name that sounds cool or make sense to the buyer.

^ Hi Jamie, i dont want to separate people by nation or skin color, but that was something that i learned 8 years ago. A friend explained me that US-People dont like dash in domain names. ;)

I agree with the hypens between words. Its nothing more than SEO thing. But as most domains are gone, it just might be the next thing. Good reading.

I’m not a fan of hypens either. As for the value of names. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That probably explains why I own so much “Beauty”. Scott Neuman - Recordweb.com

The pricing you do for a domain name especially with a low type in traffic and revenue, depends on the factors whether that domain name sounds good, brandable or if the domain consists of any commonly used, generic, or commercial words which is familiar in the user’s mind. so i agree with the fact “one’s garbage is another one’s treasure.” We often experience such cases especially with the .co.uk domain names. so i believe that they are the secret rulers of the domain sales! besides paper work is no longer needed!:)

Thank you Jamie for your opinion. I also feel that the domains which were mentioned by me are of some good worth.

I plan to invest/buy a few of these and might like to also develop a few as most of these domain names clearly indicate and define the subjects of the websites, if chosen to develop.

I am, however, not in a position to buy all but would be interested to buy and develop names like BeMyLover.net, LuvDream.com which could be developed into dating/matrimonial sites.

I am still undecided to buy the other few names like ChinaBazaars.com, FamousTouristSpots.com and DomainBazaars.com as the price of these are quite high and beyond my budget, although they have great potential of making business.

Totally agree with Seyi, it all depends on someone who thinks has a value.
I have sites http://www.BullShitWebsites.com and http://www.GoodKarmaToYou.com, http://www.BadKarmaToYou.com.

and people wanting to buy them …easy to remember and catchy.

You never know until you put your so called “garbage” out there.
