It’s just been a crazy ass year in the domain name world but is the economy really the mover of it? So many people are "going online" it’s crazy, but they are also uneducated when it comes to domain names and other aspects of the net. It makes me sick to my stomach to see some of these domain names people are using. Just keep an eye on KillerStartups.com and you will get my point in general.
A local lady started her "online business" recently and to top it off… she Was the head of a Marketing Department before starting her online biz. If you could see the domain she picked… it may give you an idea why the company she worked for didn’t fair so well…. long, strong typo potential, site function is "iffy", domain doesn’t really carry any vital keywords and nor does the content on the site. I wonder who gave her the bright idea that it was best not only to own the .com domain but ALL OTHER major TLD’s….
Then to top off registering all the other TLD’s of the crappy domain… everything else besides the .com sits on a standard Godaddy parking page / standard DNS from registration. OMG!!!! Hello….
~ I have been building a new site that has been a big challenge the past several days. I am building it using Wordpress, but the theme I picked is by far one of the hardest ones I have used yet! Several functions on the theme took me a long time to figure out as the theme functions do not match the normal terms used in Wordpress. Many of the functions are built into the code automatically which has been another challenge.
I’m not sure there is a way to avoid picking a theme that is hard to work with on the back end, but if there is… you may want to consider avoiding it as it will draw a good deal of your time doing things you didn’t expect.
~ I noticed Volkswagen is using it’s Facebook "Vanity URL" in it’s recent TV ads. I’m not so sure this is the best idea or not, as the function of the page is pretty limiting. They use Facebook.com/vw for the URL, but also hold A LOT more "vanity URL’s" and use them in the main page for each model of car. All the other vanity URL’s start with VW and then follow the model of the car. facebook.com/vwpassat etc.
VW uses an App to help people find the best matching VW product for them using the Facebook vanity URL. The big downside… you have to Log in to use it, which most will not do!
VW had always advertised in the past with it’s GREAT 2 letter .com domain VW.com, but I think they will go back to putting that in there ads pretty quickly.
