Wendy’s® food chain rolled out a new commerical last night during the CMA awards and used the domain name WendysRealTime.com for the site they were promoting. This is a full site and not just using domain forwarding.
As with many TV spots and the marketing sites that go along with them, this is a flash style site. Although it is flash, it is pretty cool and unique!
The basics of WendysRealTime.com are showing tweets from Twitter.com in near real time in cool little light blue boxes. All the tweets are based on keywords they set and are bascially all "food" related like bacon, breakfast, dinner, lunch, hungry, chili etc and then I noticed random keywords like CMA’s because the commercial ran during the awards show.
Each tweet is clickable and after two clicks will bring you to the person who sent the tweet.
Included in the mainly tweets are pictures of people eating at Wendy’s or simply eating Wendy’s food at home, work etc. From time to time there are video’s related to Wendy’s and some random inserted images of food, Wendy’s logo etc.
The pictures appear to be coming from Facebook.com and Wendy’s is grabbing the images using keywords again like "Frosty", "Wendy’s" and so on from what I can tell.
All the things displayed fade in from the side of the screen and drop into the background with new things constantly appearing to the front of your screen and fading out to the back.
One problem with simply selecting generic keywords like Breakfast and so on showing tweets… I was seeing random tweets like " I made my husband breakfast this morning". "We are in the chili cook off this weekend" "Did you see Kevin Bacon last night" etc. Not exactly related to "Wendy’s" if you ask me.
Overall, it’s an interesting, unique site that makes you Hungry by seeing all these people talk mainly about food, images of people eating and video to go along with it! Brilliant marketing really, because it made me hungry visiting the site!
