Three character domain names are a pretty interesting category of domains. As normal, .com 3 character domains always seem to hold the most value and the most interest for this category.
3 character domains can be considered 3 letter domain names, 3 number domain names and a mixture of letter and numbers. Myself, I only consider 3 character domains as letter number combo’s.
3 number .com domains hold the highest wholesale value, followed by 3 letter domain names and then lastly the combo of letter / number mixtures.
There is a site dedicated to 3 character domain wholesale values that is updated pretty often and is interesting to look at as it shows monthly gains or loses if you invest in 3 character domain names.
Last year in March I was watching an expired domain name that I thought was a little fishy and wrote two articles about it. The domain was o0o.com LNL (Letter, Number, Letter). The domain was auctioned on NameJet.com as an expired domain and ended for $3,000 USD. (not your average price for a LNL domain)
Well, it’s a year and about 5 months later and a Very similar 3 character domain name is at auction on NameJet.com again. 0o0.com NLN (Number, Letter, Number).
By the time this one went to auction, the bid price jumped up to $2,125 after the opening bid price of $69.
The current bid for 0o0.com is $2,225 with about 2 full days in private auction at NameJet on 52 bids from 51 bidders.
I have no problem with any domain name selling for any price, but one reason I do not like either of these 3 character domains personally at these prices is because they are confusing!
The number zero can look like the letter O and like wise. Add in the mix of ALL 3 characters that can be confusing and you would have BIG problems advertising with a domain like this.
There are still a lot of uses for domain names like this, but with 99% of the domains I invest in, I want them to be as clear as a whistle! The more clear and to the point with your domain name, the better. 0o0, o0o are pretty confusing if you ask me and with prices reaching $x,xxx , I think a lot better investments are on the table.

Yes, these 3 character domains can be confusing, and thus one of the (51) bidders could be the same buyer as on the first one, trying to ‘protect his brand’! (..could be.)

I’m not that keen on those random number or letter domains.
Pity we could’nt have more .’s and )’s. I’d rather own(.)(.).com even though it does’nt pass the radio test

I got m00.com last month for a cool $311. Something different, even looks like a cow’s moooOOOOO. The next digg!

@Gazzip,
Would you make (.)(.).com (which is a pain in the ass to type btw) a porn site. LOL I bet bookmark traffic would be high.
That would be interesting.

@Kevin,
and it’s for sale. No brand to protect, but at least they have a landing page beefing up the domain as “Instantly recognisable and brandable“. Not my spelling error.
Very likely Kevin, but according to the owner… they already own the Coolest Domain on the planet.

@Jamie
Yup, it’s gotta be far more fun than it would be selling sunglasses
