I happened to discover a good friends domain name expired over the weekend and listed at public auction and as soon as I noticed it, I dropped him an email to make sure he was aware of it. Good thing I did because he wasn’t aware of it and the domain is pretty valuable.
Let’s face it, we don’t all look through our domain name registrar accounts daily and look at every domain name in them. Yes registrars send email notification and have auto renew in place, but again.. you are passing the trust onto a system that is not fail proof.
I understand that many people wait until there auto-renew takes effect and a domain name is renewed at that time. That is fine, if it works.
So what if you own very valuable assets that are the main reason your company is up and running daily and your customers can find and reach you from any place in the world. Your Domain Name! Many sites are solely based on the internet, so their domain name means A LOT to them and how the business is run.
Although "60 Days" may seem like a lot to many, a domain name within this range is getting pretty close to its expiration date IMO. 365 days is what I would set as "a limit" to let a valuable asset to my solely run internet company and its domain name getting close to the expire date! Why risk it!
Well, here are some that would rather risk it or are planning on the not so trusted Auto-Renew.
The following domain names are 60 days or less from reaching expired date.
- Local.com
- Cheetos.com
- Truck.com
- Text.com
- MyQuote.com
- Promote.com
- CD.net
- Pittsburg.org
- Met.net
- ArtMuseum.com
- CarreerBuilder.com
- Outlaws.com
- Counseling.com
- InternetStats.como
- ShoeWarehouse.com
All are with a wide range of domain name registrars but All are also very valuable domain name assets. I made up this list in about 5 minutes and I’m sure there are tens of thousands of valuable domain name assets held that are 60 days or less from reaching the expired date if the domain name is not renewed. Some will get renewed, some will hit the date, DNS will change and then renewal will take place and some may even hit expired, stay expired and be auctioned off! All preventable. I wrote a post about When Does Your Domain Expire?, which was very similar to this posting but I can not express how important it is to make sure your domain registration is not in any danger of expiring.
No reason for a service like CarreerBuilder.com to let its domain name get remotely close to expire date! They are a solely run company on the internet. There domain name is registered with NetworkSolutions.com … which is a service you have to turn on the auto renew to work, let alone have a valid credit card on file for it to work or the fact that in NSI’s TOS it clearly states you can lose your domain name The Day It Expires!
Why risk it, Renew it!

CarreerBuilder is a typo, so not too valuable.

I think auto-renew usually work good…. Off course, in terms there is sufficient money (not over-limit) in your credit card…

I agree that auto-renew usually works.. but it first needs to be turned on at some registrars, Credit Card on file needs to be valid and working. Often times, many people forget to update CC data after a card expires.
