I often find my days too short with all the things a domainer does in a day but I have curbed a great deal of things that I use to do and I think doing several of these things has saved me a lot of time. So here are a couple suggestions on saving some time for the average domainers and things you may consider.

Backordering Domains

Heck yeah it is fun backordering domain names at SnapNames, NameJet and Pool but how often do you bid on these domains? Think your going to "steal a deal" for a couple hundred bucks on an LLL.com? Your likely better off not burning the time it takes to backorder, watch the auction and later deleted the domain from your account!

Backorder domain names you really feel you have a shot at winning! I use to backorder all CCC.com domains, LLLL.com’s, LLL.com’s etc but 99% of the time I would never bid. That equaled A LOT of wasted time.

Backordering domain names you really feel you could win will simply cut down on wasted time. Be real with yourself.

News / Blogs

So you check Domaining.com or NameBee.com 5, 7, 10 times a day? Your favorite blog several times a day? Several of your favorite blogs? Sure, I do not want you to stop checking out DotWeekly all the time but the fact is… the things I write this morning will still be around tonight for you to browse around and learn from.

Consider cutting back the amount of times you check a specific site in a day, only to find out there wasn’t anything new or worth while reading! This will save you some time and you will be more productive reading several things at one time.. instead of one thing every couple of hours!

Trim the fat! Do you spend time browsing a site that really doesn’t help you. What’s the point of reading it then! Again, I want you to read DotWeekly, but it is my job to provide you something that is worth your time in reading. If a site you visit often just isn’t providing you the benefit of reading (including my site) I suggest you stop visiting. I have done this with Twitter recently, because it is the same shit, just a different day! I learn very little from Twitter and I have better things to do with my time.

Customer Support

Sick of submitting a "ticket" that you are waiting for a problem to get fixed? Keep an eye out for a direct contact via domain forums or blogs and get yourself a great contact person who you can email directly. Don’t pester them, ask legit questions and be to the point. This is often an account rep or a general CS person that has helped you in the past. I have a folder in my email service that is dedicated to GREAT people who answer questions at the services I use every day and don’t act like I don’t know what I am talking about! I save and use these contacts and it saves me a great deal of time!

Sometimes "ticket systems" work but many times it takes a long time and several "messages" to get the answer you are looking for. Asking the right person directly can save you a ton of time and likely get your issue fixed faster than waiting 1-3 days via a ticket.

Domain Renewals

A simple process but if you are renewing domain names by hand every couple of days.. you are wasting time! Every domain registrar that I use offers bulk renewal! I often renew domain names based on the month they are due for renewal. Auto Renew works, but you will also likely get charged the "normal fee". Discount codes are always around, so grab one of them and renew at least the domains you want to for the month that are coming up for renewal at one time! This will save you some time by not having to go to your registrar several times a week to renew a couple domains.

Stats

Holy Smokes! Yes, we all love to see the amount of money we made today via a parking provider or an affiliate account but do we really need to check this on a daily basis? The vast majority of time, the answer is NO! Most of the time, there is no reason to be checking these stats daily besides the fact is that you are burning up time. Consider checking them weekly or save the surprise to when the payment comes in!

Not checking traffic stats at parking providers daily will save you at least a couple minutes a day, if not more. This adds up overtime and you can get in a routine of checking them all on Friday’s when things are a little slower!

Consolidate Registrars

Not only a time saving measure but it can also prevent unwanted domain expiration. I started doing this after a couple years of domaining and it has saved me a good deal of time over the years. Sometimes it is hard to prevent based on buying Pending Delete domains but you should be able too keep the vast majority of your domain names at 1-3 domain registrars.

Google It

I browse around domain name forums, blogs etc and see a lot of questions being asked. A lot of these questions could have been answered by simply typing the question or part of it into Google. Trusting the source you are reading it from can answer your question in a fraction of the time it takes to somebody replying to your question. Who say’s the person answering the question on a forum is trusting either! Most of the time, a simple Google search will answer your question.

For whatever reason, it appears that many domainers fear or do not use Google to answer their questions. Save some time from posting a question and Google it. Sure it can go either way sometimes but you likely will save some time for yourself and somebody else by Googling it first!

Doing any of these 7 tips should save you at least some time in your normal domaining day! If you have a tip that I didn’t cover and it saves you some time, feel free to post it in the comment section. I hope I am able to save you at least some time that will make your day a bit more productive by providing you these tips.

    Here is one also:

Actually work. Don’t visit news sites, go get a glass of milk and a sandwich, sit in the back yard for a spell, talk in forums all day long, spend time on the phone with friends.

You can make a “job” out of these silly things and never get a thing done.

Work? LOL, yep that does help! You can still have fun in the process but you do have to do some work.

And stick to what you originally intended to do that day! I often find I read something that has me off searching for dropping or available domains on the latest buzz word that never comes to anything (quadricopters comes to mind).

Make yourself a daily plan and stick to it!

    Nice post, thanks

Jamie, do you ever wonder if backordering actually brings attention to a name that might otherwise go unnoticed? Do you have a strategy for that? I’ve heard of some people placing the backorder the morning of the drop for instance.

    @John,
If the site you are placing the backorder at displays publicly that there is a bid.. Yes, it does draw attention to the domain. The best option currently is to simply wait until the last minute to place your backorder. This will help reduce the amount of eyes on the domain.
