Well, Apple Inc. announced yesterday that they would offer "free" bumper cases to customers of the iPhone 4 to help with reception issues. Customer have the option with an Apple Bumper or a Bumper Case from a third party.  So, being the domainer that I am, I looked at this from a domain aspect and dug into what I thought were the best two domains. 1 generic and 1 trademark.

I was pretty shocked when I looked at one thing…. the registration date of each domain names!

BumperCase.com is the "best" of the two domains. 1.) it doesn’t contain the term Apple in it, so it clears up potential trademark issues. 2.) more phones than "Apple" use a bumper case! This makes it a nice generic product domain name and a quality investment to sell Bumper Cases.

AppleBumper.com is the matching term Apple uses for its cases (Apple iPhone 4 Bumper) is the actual term.. but most people simply use the term "Apple Bumper" when searching for it. A lot of people also search for "Apple Bumper Case".

Again, I was pretty shocked that only about a month ago, that BumperCase.com was registered. According to whois, Michael Morgan was the owner of the domain name before going to privacy protection on 6/25/10.

So did the domain buyer just sit on their ass with the domain and just "park it"?

Nope! They built on it and I would bet it is paying off for them! From what I can tell… it would appear the owner is using an affiliate link with a Buy It Now by several featured iPhone 4’s  and Google Adsense. Notice that Bumpers.com 468×60 sticks out pretty nice as well. NOT, it is not Bumpers.. it is Bumprs.com (minus the E)…

AppleBumper.com is NOT a good buy! The domain sits parked and is making GoDaddy money off a standard park page.

BumperCase.com purchased 1 day earlier is a Great Buy! It is already likely making money, gaining strength in SE’s and will prove to be a nice long term investment. I think it would do well even parked, but building it out using affiliate links quickly and adding content was very wise of the owner.

Only 1 day difference in purchase dates.. but oh the difference in "quality" of purchase!

BumperCases.com the plural version was also registered on 6/7/10 but appears to have been registered by somebody other than the BumperCase.com owner. That domain is parked.

iPhone4Bumper.com was also registered 6/7/10 and has privacy protection. AppleBumper.com also has privacy.
