We all see it daily. Somebody put’s there heart and soul into an online business. Spends a bunch of cash on building a website full of products or offering a service but uses a Crappy Domain Name!
So many things need to be in place to make it all happen but then you happen to forget about "The Name" you are going to promote this online business with, your off on the wrong foot from the start.
Every website needs a domain name. This very same domain name will be the name used to tell people where to go to find it…. So why use a Crappy Domain Name or one that’s hard to remember or hard to spell or really long?
You will be using this domain in Ads, on T-shirts, maybe on your car, likely business cards etc.
Well, I think it goes back to the start when most are thinking about going online with the business!
People put a budget in place to have a site built and this fee is almost automatic, but do not set a budget aside for a Good Domain Name. This needs to change.
The fact is, a lot of people were smart and registered domain names based on the fact they are Generic, Clear, Easy To Spell, Make Sense and end in .com . That is why most people think "All the good ones are gone". Well, yes, all the good ones are gone but that doesn’t mean you can’t buy one of those "good ones".
This is where the budget comes into place for your domain name Before you start your site! If you do not have a good domain, don’t launch your site yet! First impressions are priceless. Trust is priceless!
Studies have proven that Nice Generic domain names get more clicks on search engines then, long~ugly~spammy looking domains.
Here is a good example of what I am talking about.
KBCostumes.com thought it would be a "good idea" to change it’s domain name for it’s online costume store. First, KBCostumes.com is not the best domain but it’s not as bad as the "new" one they picked to use either.
The new domain they picked is Shop4HalloweenCostumes.com . OMG!!!!! NO!!!!
So why is this domain name crappy?
- No domain name should start with SHOP. If it’s at the end of the domain, it’s a different story.
- Including a Number in the domain is not only Unprofessional but Ugly and it leaves a great chance for a Typo (missed traffic). For, Four, 4
- Not generic enough. Just by having the word Halloween in the domain, when somebody see’s it, they will not think of "other" times when somebody may were a costume.
- Long! 22 characters + 4 if you include the .com. People are Lazy!
- Keywords. The domain has 2 good keywords, but one is Seasonal.
Some other options for a domain name for this company would include domains like:
- DiscountCostumes.com ~Parked
- CostumeShop.com ~ Full site already
- CostumeStore.com ~ Same owner as CostumeShop.com
- CostumeDeals.com For sale $1,988
Even if you feel you do not have much of a budget for your domain name, you need to either reconsider or find somebody that knows A Lot about domain names so you can find the best one your money can buy, that is Clear, Easy To Spell and Speaks for itself on what you offer in the shortest way!
Do not put full trust in your "Hosting Provider" to find you the perfect domain and finding an "available" domain is also not likely the best idea. (it’s available for a reason most of the time)
Having just ONE domain name is not something you have to either. You can own more then one domain and use domain forwarding to send that traffic to your main site. This is best used for marketing. Let’s say you owned Costumes.com and use that for your main site but you also own PetCostumes.com . I would use PetCostumes.com in ads on Pet Sites or for pet related search advertising. Then simply use domain forwarding and forward PetCostumes.com to your main site Costumes.com .
Use Whois.sc to find the owner of the domain name you Really Wand and Need and make sure you have a decent budget in place for a Good Domain Name, just like you have a budget for your site to be built.

Good post, like Rick said the bigger companies today are finally starting to “get it”, even the webmasters are slow to adapt to having a memorable, brandable name. I regret not grabbing PlaidShop.com when it was available! I like clothing names lately.

Good Post!
>> finding an “available” domain is also not likely the best idea.
>> (it’s available for a reason most of the time)
There are even “available” COM names that are better than Shop4HalloweenCostumes.com: http://www.hotnamelist.com/search?query=halloween
For instance: TheHalloweenCostume.com
Not great, but better.
>> Having just ONE domain name is not something you have to either.
Yeah, I think that is the most important point. A guy selling halloween costumes needs to be able to get as many leads as possible. Multiple domains with type-in traffic or high-value search terms are the best investment he can make.
