I had just seen a post by Name Media (BettinaNameMedia) over at DnForum which states to "put in your anonymous preorder now!" for expired domain auctions which they posted a list.

As a domain investor looking to get the biggest bang for my buck, I would not advise this. It simply put’s up a Big Red Flag on the domain, which speaks! That big red flag says, LOOK AT ME, I am 1 out of 44 domain names at Afternic that has a Preorder currently out of the total 52,645 currently listed. I AM GOOD!

Those 44 domains stick out like a sore thumb and make other peoples job Easy and the likely hood of the price going higher with a greater amount of bidders in the auction! Afternic provides a link on their site called: All Afternic Auction Inventory (expiring domains)! This link allows you to DL the list, open it in Excel, delimit the list, then sort by "Number of bids".

BINGO… Anonymous, No!

I can understand why NameMedia wants you to get in your Preorder asap, but I also do not think it’s right for them to claim it’s Anonymous, because it’s not.

The same goes at TDNAM.com, SnapNames.com and NameJet.com . The more back orders the higher up on the list the domain get’s when people sort by "Bidders" or "Preorders". With No bids it keeps the domain "Hidding in the mix" and allows you to put in your last second bid before the allotted time expires to place it. In return, less bidders and it will also be more likely you get a better deal on the domain.

What you’ve said was spot on.
I don’t bid on tdnam’s expired names. I wait till it drops into the firesale then snap it up. Bidding for the world to see is plain stupid unless a noob or a high roller bids , well then you really have no choice…

Yeah, definetly not a good idea to place it early, Its took alot of the fun out of it too, I used to love waiting to see if I was going to be the only person who noticed it was dropping.

Now its more like – follow the yellow brick road !

When do you think is the best time to backorder a domain name with snapnames? In other words, when is the latest time to order so that you minimize the number of eyes on it?

I looked for the actual “time” that you can backorder to, but didn’t discover it. If the domain is Pending Delete, it will not show how many backorders are placed from what I can see. If it’s a partner domain, you can wait until the day of the auction starting… I would say no later then 1:00 pm Central Time. Sorry I couldn’t provide an exact time.
