Google is celebrating the anniversary of the Barcode creation, which had it’s patent approved today, in 1952 by making it’s Google logo a UPC Barcode for today.

I think the Barcode is an amazing tool that will be greatly used in the future for shopping and finding things on the web! Price comparing, inventory tracking, visiting a website from a print ad, all done with a persons cellphone camera.

Google offers a web based QR code generator called ZXing (Zebra Crossing) and allows you to create a QR Code including a good deal of different information based on what you select in the drop down menu. Google offers many types of downloads, scanners etc. at the ZXing link above.

Here is what the DotWeekly.com URL looks like in a QR Code Barcode:

DotWeekly.com as a barcode

QR Code is trademarked by Denso Wave Inc.

The more commonly used Barcode that is on products and looks like a bunch of lines is called UPC mainly using Code 128. There are a lot of different formats. BarcodeInc.com offers a free generator for this type of code as well.

I would expect to only start seeing more and more of these codes used in the future for directing customers to a website. Pretty cool stuff.

Use NeoReader.. much better! And its owned by NeoMedia who owns the patents for indirect barcode scanning. Anyone using Zxing for indirect scanning needs to also license from NeoMedia! So be careful!
