When you think of batteries, you may think of some of the powerful brands that spend Billions on advertisements but you may be shocked to find out that none of those "brands" own what many people naturally search for on the internet, Batteries.com!
Batteries.com is a work horse all by itself. When anybody simply sees or hears the term Batteries.com, they know Exactly what they will find upon arriving at the site. Batteries! Now why wouldn’t a company that makes batteries like Duracell® own the domain name Batteries.com? Clearly they don’t "get it" when it comes to the power of generic domain names. Maybe they were afraid to move away from their brand name? Those questions are hard to answer exactly but the one I can answer, they do not own it!
In fact, the domain name Duracell.com was first registered in 1995. The current whois for Batteries.com dates back to 1999 showing the domain name actually Dropped Twice before that time!
Currently on Google when somebody performs a "search" for the term batteries, Batteries.com holds one of the all important rankings above the fold and holds the # 3 spot! Batteries.com does get beat out currently by one "brand" and that happens to be BatteriesPlus.com, a heavily marketed battery company.
Have you even seen an ad run on TV for Batteries.com? I know I haven’t and owning the powerhouse domain name Batteries.com sure helps them in the advertising budget, yet they hold a very similar rank on Google! I think if you were able to obtain the amount of money spent on ads by Batteries Plus and them promoting there website and compare those to Batteries.com ad, it would be laughable.
Batteries.com carries some 45,000 products! To show the Power of owning a generic domain name, I think one needs to look at the Keyword Terms that are driving traffic to the website. In return, I think it is vital these terms be "natural searched terms" because people naturally search for them and they are not searched based upon a paid advertising spot!
Here is an Alexa.com screen shot showing the popular searched terms Batteries.com gets its traffic from:

I would say ALL 10 are considered "natural" search terms and no advertising is needed to create these terms! Now if you look at the same style of chart for a brand that heavily advertises in the same industry, what do people search for to find them?

So it’s clear that people find them mostly by searching there brand name and not actually the products they offer… this is a problem, because advertising is needed to keep people searching for them. Batteries.com is showing exactly why it is VITAL to own what your customers Naturally Search For, while using a generic product domain name that matches what people naturally search for on a daily basis! The domain name not only builds trust for the customer, getting suppliers, and helps lower advertising budgets, but the domain name simply makes sense when people see it! Congrats goes out to Batteries.com for understand the extreme power of owning a category killer domain name!
