Search engine competition is Strong and even getting 1 page / post ranking number 1 for a term you want on search engines is not easy. Now if you do happen to have a page / post ranking #1 or on P1 Great!
So how can you improve that #1 rank? Get the second one as well!
It has been proven that the top 5 natural search rankings get the most clicks. Clearly #1 and #2 will get the most, so if you can bump down the competition further down away from your ranking, this will greatly improve you chance at getting the searcher!
Here is some proof and may answer my last post and why I did it.
Back in Feb of 2009 I had wrote about the Snugglette™ aka Snuggie™ For Kids blanket. I also happen to have an affiliate program working with this product. After writing the post, it didn’t take long for me to rank #1 on Google for the term snuggie for kids and I hold a top 3 spot for snugglette also.
Since Google now shows "popular searches" in real time as you type in your search, snuggie f is all a searcher needs for that full term to show up #1 and the term simply get’s clicked (to save typing time) and the search results are displayed.

Again, I rank #1 for the search term, even beating out snuggieforkids.com site.
Since other sites are promoting the same item I am and rank below my #1 spot, I want to control as much of the top rankings as I can!
That was my reason for my second posting earlier today, which is somewhat similar to the first article I wrote back in Feb. Since the meta, title keywords and tags are similar (not exactly the same) with a little bit different content, the SE’s notice this and rank it right next to the first rank that I had in place already.
So now what will searches see when searching for snuggie for kids? Exactly what I wanted!

So now I rule the top X’s 2. I have doubled my shot at getting searches to click in. I Bumped down everybody a spot and ranking #10 off P1 etc. How long did it take my second post to show up on P1 at Google? About a minute or two after writing it, so it doubled my chances of getting more clicks nearly instantly!
The searcher also now has a big target on my two links as I only have to fight against the paid ad on top and the #3 rank because that is all the user sees above the fold. Paid ads on the right are weak IMO!
This works best if you already hold a higher P1(page 1) natural ranking. If the indexed term results are lower, you hold even a greater chance! You do not have to rank #1 in order for this to work either. You can rank 3rd and grab the 3rd and 4th rank etc. In doing so.. this also may move you up another spot or two!
It can be done with high indexed search results as well, just not as easily unless you hold the exact match domain. In this case, you are likely to get Site Links under your domain and likely the #1 and #2 spots. DotWeekly.com has this. You can see the Google search result here.

Thank you Morgan. I think this also shows the power of A.) a blog and B.) WordPress and it’s SEO tools when used correctly. I could show many other examples, but that would reveal many of my niche secrets that I do

How much affiliate sales? I love snugglettes.

@Borat,
I will not come out and directly say it, but I can say this. My post in Feb that holds the #1 spot, makes more each month then all my 450+ domains parked did last month.

WordPress when used as a full fledged website has bumped some of my sites to the first page many times without spending a dime on adwords etc. Put up a few related sites using wordpress and you may dominate the 1st page. If you can’t figure out wordpress.org, WordPress.com or Blogger.com is a second choice for almost instant traction. My personal fave is wordpress.org. Pick a service provider that will load it up automatically. Load in a few plugins, eg. seo, google xml, statpress etc and your off to the races.
Cheers.
