Earlier today I wrote about a couple .org domain name sales and one of those happened to be PlaygroundEquipment.org which sold for $5,000 over at Sedo. During some research I did for the story, I often check past domain name sales matching the keyword and when I did this, I discovered two more recent sales of matching keywords.
Did the seller of PlaygroundEquipment.org know of these very recent other sales of the matching keyword they owned but sold in different TLD’s? I can’t answer this but based on the sale price, I would say no and this is why.
Using DomainTools.com Sales History function, I simply typed into the search box playgroundequipment and clicked search. This resulted in 5 records displayed:

There is very important information included in this chart if you are the PlaygroundEquipment.org domain name seller! Doing a recent history search for reported domain name sales similar or exact to what the seller was selling, they would have noticed the recent sales of $10,000 for the .info and the $4,000 sale of the .biz.
This is a big deal because it shows the prices paid for other TLD’s and would also display the likely hood that the same buyer is interested in your domain name. With the sales on the 15th for the .info and likely recently with the .biz, I think it would have been a wise play for the .org owner to offer the domain name closer to $10K or even higher!
.com domains almost always sell the highest and .org often are close to .net depending on the keyword. .info and .biz would follow in value. With $4K being paid for the .biz, I could easily see the .org selling for a fair amount higher than the $5K it sold for.
Yes, $4,600 profit in two years is nice (notice the sale in 2008 for $390) but I think money was left on the table at $5K based on the other very recent sales of the matching keyword domain sales.
Always use all your resources before selling a domain name. Checking domain name sales sites like DomainTools.com Sales History, NameBio.com, DnJournal.com or simply do a search on Google.com using the full domain name with TLD and include "sold" or something similar to it.
Depending on where your offer or contact from the buyer is and the information you obtain, here are some more tools that I use to research interested parties:
IP Address: IP2Location.com (Live Demo box on rt side of screen, enter in IP address of buyer can help display GEO location and sometimes a network domain)
Google Search: Email address, name, nickname, address)
Google News: Search the exact match keyword phrase to your domain name and see if something is in the news
Google Blog Search: Do the same as above
Reported Domain Name Sales: As mentioned with the story above, use any of the sources I mentioned above to search for recently reported domain name sales
Using basically all the tools above should give you a good idea of who the buyer is, any recent activity they have or what their intentions may be with the domain name. It will likely be pretty rare that you run into "other" matching keyword domain sales but buyers do buy in groups and often try to grab the .com, .net and .org . Do not out price yourself but with the situation like PlaygroundEquipment.org, even at $5K there was likely money left on the table by the seller.
