In today’s weekly video on ChefPatrick.com, the chef offers up a pretty girl in the video which is nothing new and just fine, but the model today is topless and is body painted with the WhyPark logo across her chest.

Creative marketing for sure and with her nipples very clear in the video, I’m sure many enjoyed the video, but did it go to far for a domain name blog?

Now I am all for creative marketing but does the domain name industry need this kind? Is it OK to post body painted girls with nipples clearly showing on domain industry sites?

It is clear from the statement from WhyPark.com that they are OK with it. Craig from whypark posted the following in comment #7:

This is easily the best advertising we’ve ever had. Nice work Patrick!

Even though I am a male, I think this crossed the line a little bit. No hard feelings Chef, just my opinion ;)

Let me know what you think? Will this give WhyPark a black eye, the chef or people of the domain industry that happen to see it?

It seems like they wanted to leave godaddy’s commercials in dust – which they did, however this looks real cheap and gives it a look of advertisement for a porn website rather than a parking services website.
As a domainer, I would park my domains with them based on their service level, expertise in that area and how much money I can make, not based on some chic showing nipples.

Before I read this the first thing I said was .. it has to be an American thinking this.

So funny. In almost every other part of the world you can see a nipple on the cover of a newspaper yet how dear we cover one up in paint here in the land of the free.

The # 1 rule of advertising is to create a campaign or advertising that creates discussion.

Advertisements like this have one purpose – to get people talking.

ChefPatrick did not cross any line – just a ridiculous connotation. I’m pretty sure if Bob Parsons did this you would hold him to the highest praise based on your posts.

Send ChefPatrick thanks for having something else to write about it today – the gossip of whether this crossed a line or not is too funny.

Easy way to determine if the domaining community thinks Patrick went too far this time, just compare the views of this video with his others videos.

Its easy to say we don’t like it, but if we are watching it… well, that’s another story=)

I was watching the tara next top model show yesterday and the shoot they did was nearly naked (all models did it)

    It didn’t make the headlines…

America is way too uptight about sexuality and skin etc.

    @Alan,
I see it perfectly fine with the pretty girls and the tank tops that chef does each week (which Bob also does) and there is really no question, because Godaddy would never post an ad or video on their site like this.

I don’t think he crossed the lines. Living here in Europe you see this type of stuff in the daily newspapers, billboards. Like Alan said “Advertisements like this have one purpose – to get people talking.” If I wasn’t already a member of WhyPark.com I would go check it out.

    Disgusting!

The objectification of women in the domaining field is both disgusting and backwards, harking back to a time when women couldn’t vote and were considered property of their husbands.

    Shame on Chef Patrick!!!!!!

Maybe we should put him and his ilk in chains with a strong woman standing over him and cracking a whip.

How is this any different than having water splashed over breasts. A nipple – oh my, the whole world will collapse if we see a nipple.

I did not had planed to watch Chef’s journal this week as I don’t understand anything when he talk (annyway I don’t understand anything when anyone talk in english) but after see your post Jamie I changed my mind.

Like allways I laughed and had few minutes of hapiness. It’s probably very basic, maybe ridiculous but I admit it’s pleasant and I like that. Like allways I spend a good moment watching Chef doing the clown (I like his mimics).

I don’t think Chef crossed the line, he was simply funny but stayed correct.

Its marketing at its best, you are talking about it and others are. Whypark must be wrapped getting extra advertising for free. Youtube may pull it off though, as it might be too much detail for their site. Over here in New Zealand, our national air line has been doing body paint tv adverts with male and females which created bit of a stir to say the least. Not as much detail or should I say nipple but another successful advert going viral.
The only thing it can have a bad effect on, is the brand image of a company and I think with chefpatrick its done no harm to his, people were already expecting it in a way and was no surpise for some that this type of marketing would be used when a company forked out the cash.

How many people watched replays of the twin towers collapsing? Many will/did say they didn’t like it, but I guess ‘your logic’ means their watching of it, is ‘another story’!!??

I’m not mad at all about this article Jamie. I fully expected someone to try and take advantage of the buzz I’ve generated. As other commentators have said, this article is proof that it worked. WhyPark and I generated buzz!

What I don’t like is you drawing lines from my eyes to here breast. Not cool! I am also disappointed that you did not at least link to my blog. If you are going to voice your opinion at least link to my site so other readers can view and voice theirs.

My wife was with me the entire time. She sees absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Now, I know if your idol Bob Parsons did this you would think it was genius. To say that he wouldn’t do it is ridiculous. The man films hot models in the shower for Super Bowl ads. The only difference with my video is the nipples. It is not something we wanted to show but the body artist did not have the proper covers for them. Something like this has already been done with the 2008 and 2009 SI swimsuit edition which is one of their best selling magazines. Here is a link to a video of their work, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSFYdEMZ3E8.

Jamie, tell us the truth, how many times did you watch the video? :)

Just wait, there’s more. Tomorrow I will have pictures from the photo shoot and downloadable wallpaper for those that enjoyed.

  24. @Borat You’re out of control!

You sir, Jamie, have crossed the line!

    1. No link to the video?!?! You fake us out with a &#ck!#g ‘screen capture’!? What kind of reporting is that?

    2. No link to the source? Come on… Inquiring minds want to know. How do we know this isn’t all a conspiracy?

    3. So, nipples cross the line? What about her well-formed pendulous yet firm breasts which are clearly displayed on your site?

I think this clearly shows that Chef Patrick is simply quite progressive and inclusive in trying to reach the *entire* domaining audience. While it sure was a hit with male domainers of all ages (ok, ok — *most* male domainers), and plenty of female domainers too – the demographic I’m sure he was targeting with this segment was the ’18-25 female-nudist-artist-bodypainter’ domainer segment. They’re a growing force in the market you know….

Hey! These are tough times – you’ve got to make sure you reach out to your *entire* pool of prospective customers.

    Classy response from Patrick.

Whoring press / attention from others isn’t so nice but it’s to be expected, especially in the blogosphere.

A linkback would be nice :) As for good press, bad press, and everything in between… It’s fine as long as people are talking about you so I personally don’t care but I know Patrick tries his best to do everything in good taste more or less so give the guy a break.

Seriously guys and girls, I see both sides of the argument. My CCIN sales team (Kate, Natalie and Joanne) would not think this is cool because they’re all extremely educated and have dealt with Neantherdal “You must be a dumb blonde” sexism because they also happen to be quite attractive.

On the other hand, I have no problem with it and thought it was more tongue-in-cheek humor than sexual (I was in a rock band for years and this is barely PG-13 to me). And, yes, the USA vs Europe cultural comparisons hit a nerve because I am 100% Italian-American and I wince in Italy when my friends poke fun at our Puritanical heritage because I am fiercely pro-American (and I know they have a point).

The bottom line is that the Bob Parsons’ comparison is dead on and what’s good for the GoDaddy Goose is good for Chef Patrick’s Gander.

    @Chef,
I have added in the link. I watched the video once and I had my wife watch it as well to see if she thought it went a bit far with the nipples showing. I also showed her the last video and she thought it was very professional and your model in that was great. As I said to Alan before, “my idol Bob” wouldn’t post such a video (showing nipples). I have no problem with the girls, tank tops, bikinis etc… Showing the nipples can and will upset some, because it is not something you see everyday.

“And what are female domainers supposed to take from this?”

Well, aside from the fact the model is undeniably gorgeous, I’d say: lighten up. I actually find it kinda comical. At the same time, it was probably done to create buzz and buzz was exactly what it got.

Can we get back to domaining now? :P

    1) More comments here than on any other article – *bing* 1 for Whypark
    2) Makes GoDaddy’s limpid attempts at sex selling look forced, Whypark did it right (by the way, biggest domain company in the world, GoDaddy)
    3) How many domainers here own ADULT domains?
    4) For the women, I’m sure they all realize that their bodies will always be a magnet for attention. “Objectivization”? Tell that to artists throughout civilization and beyond.
    5) Ever get weirded out when the Discovery channel, or even Survivor, blurs out ass cracks, cleavage, “headlights” on tight female tshirts? I’m sick of being treated like we’re in the 1950′s again.

Personally, I wouldn’t have promoted my company in this manner, because my mom would just kick my ass. Then again, my mom would kick my ass for not calling her after a few weeks.

People will do whatever is necessary to get noticed. Mission accomplished.

Personally it doesn’t bother me or affect me, but on the flip side it isn’t something I would have done.

Patrick’s a simple enough guy to do what he needs to do to make things happen in the way that he’s comfortable with.

Maybe next year he can make some WhyPark Porn that I can download for free. Two girls with Patrick playing the role of Max Hardcore would be most special.

This type of “advertising” is tasteless and rude – not to mention just plain stupid. Who cares if Bob Parsons does it? So what!

Is this how WhyPark really wants to build their brand? Seriously? I’m stunned that they’re okay with this. There are so many better things to be associated with than naked women. For instance, quality service, excellent features, revenue, usabilty, or just being a great bunch of people. Using a nipple to get attention is just being lazy.

I stopped reading Chef Patrick’s blog because of these videos. I thought they were cheap and unnecessary. The videos actually drove me away rather than kept me coming back. The blog content was okay but I have plenty of other blogs to read and these videos are certainly not why I was coming to the blog and I’ve now stopped reading it completely.

I think it’s really funny that he thinks he’s created “buzz” All he’s created is his 15 minutes. How sad that he thinks it’s more. If the only way he can think to create buzz is by being offensive and rude then maybe he should try to learn a little more about marketing. Yes, sex, is one very common way to getting attention. I get that. But, it’s just not enough on it’s own either. At some point, he WILL need to come up with some substance. Videos would be a great opportunity to get real content across, it’s unfortunate that the only thing he uses them for is a pathetic cry for attention.

So sad so many people are so critical over this.
Funny, when I was in Germany they had legal prostitution, billboards that show naked girls etc They did not seem up tight about it over there and it appears we have the most sex crimes almost anywhere because people are so up tight about nudity and sex that there are numerous laws making criminals out of people that elsewhere would never be. We have the religious fanatics, then you have those that prefer the same sex and if they are males this is very appalling to them. I do not believe that sex is what they are selling or representing but whether people want to publicly acknowledge or not many people are drawn to sexual nature of things. This is a natural thing and is being used as a tool for attention and when done there will always be a great deal of controversey and is a tactic of media to utilize all the time. Because this is more sexual in nature many people fear it. Sex is a part of nature and just because a lot of people have hang ups about it being exposed or
in fear because that should not be in the open
and we are not animals is ridiculous. If it is so offensive then don’t watch it. Or many will say what they think others want to hear and others will stick to it out of fear of ridicule they may face. This is just a gross exagerration of politics. Nothing more — most all of us have sex — Does it bother you then??? I think not ! ! !
Don’t get me wrong as far as value though. I think if one has nothing to offer but sexual content then maybe that should be their niche. But Chef Patrik does offer good content and maybe a little to different for some but I bet many a male find it a more pleasing to the eye to see some pretty young girl help putting out the interesting subject matter many are there to hear from sure maybe you can find that elsewhere also but I feel it is more lively and upbeat and am stressed out on sexual hangups.
It comes down to this as a male– Would you rather hear and see some old guy telling you the updates in your market in which he may be unenthusiastic or some you fine looking gal giving you that same info with eye appeal and enthusiasm. And from which will you probably retain more of what was said???
By the way I believe Dr. Bob Parsons was enthused with the controversey created with his Super Bowl ad and said that is where the power of the advertising comes from is the controversey. Overall though, I do not believe we are in a time or people are comfortable enough to do this form of advertising as of yet. Think of the number of nudist colonies although we may all be born naked and many will be naked with those they are comfortable with and yet see how many are not in a more public environment.

i haven’t seen it yet, but not necessary in order to produce a reaction…

yes, it’s somewhat out of bounds – obscenity at its shy look hiding behind a loud slogan…

which is which? the message or the messenger?…it’s like Playboy promoting anti-abortion, lol…indeed the means doesn’t justify the ends.

The only thing that matters is how much more did the cash register ring for “Why Park” after the commercial. And I’d guess like GoDaddy very little because people are tuned in to the sex and tuned out of the message (in GoDaddy’s case there is no message- a missed opportunity to educate end users during a SuperBowl.)

I’d bet on the FreeCreditReport.com type ads any day over sex, because at the end of the day there’s action and sales and you understand they understand your problem and can solve it.

Another blog today talks about subliminal advertising. Yes there is subliminal advertising that the people who engineered this thinking it gets them sales when it really gets them squat, are boobs.
