I talk to a wide range of people that are either in business for themselves, considering to start a business or thinking of taking their business online. No matter what your business is, I think you need some sort of online presence.
The internet is a crowded space and with any type of business, you need to be found in order to make sales and have your business grow.
When picking your domain name for your site, you really need to consider several things but the most important is to Make Sense.
Making sense starts with several things like:
~ If your company name is Seedz because you sell seeds and wanted to come up with a cool sounding name… keep in mind that when your company name is heard via word of mouth or used in radio advertising… Seedz is going to sound like Seeds.
This will simply lead into missed visitors to your online site due to the uncommon spelling. It can also lead to you "Explaining" your name and the Z which takes time away from you talking about your products and services.
Matching your company name and domain name are vital as it has become second nature for customers to visit your exact company or product name and add .com at the end when on the internet.
If you get creative with the spelling, be sure to cover bases and own the common spellings and your creative spelling if your budget is fitting and your online presence is very important.
~ Familiar Terms! This is very important with making sense with your domain name! For an example… a store can be called a lot of things, but in the end, the most popular term is Store. Other terms used are Shoppe, Mart, Plaza, Center, Depot etc.
OnlineStore.com will be remembered a lot more, by a larger group then getting fancy with OnlineShoppe.com . This is fitting when using generic terms as well. If you sell garage doors, the perfect domain name for you would be GarageDoors.com!
~ Match your domain name to what what people already search for on the net. Here is a keyword search tool provided by Google.com . The more people search for the exact term, the better. It is very likely that somebody will own the domain name as the more people search it, but how many empty lots around your house do you see that are not owned by somebody! Many of the domain names will be for sale if you contact the current owner using the whois database of domain name owners but many will not.
~ It is very important to have a budget in place when buying your domain name. There are endless things to consider when purchasing a domain name but if your main income is going to come from your site, you should hold a decent budget to own a great piece of internet real estate and understand the internet and the roll domain names play!
The biggest thing to consider when choosing a domain name for your site is not to over think the process. Making very clear sense with your domain name is extremely vital if you expect people to be able to find you and remember the term. This will also help reduce the cost of advertising in a couple ways! The term is clear and easy to remember. Secondly, a little thing called direct navigation is real and happens daily.
~ When purchasing a domain name from somebody, how do you tell if the price is right? Is the domain name worth it?
Domain names are one of a kind, so that is one very important thing to keep in mind. If you simply think the domain at the price being offered is too much, then that domain is not right for you. If you think it is a fair price and worth it to you, then it is priced right. To me, a perfect domain name is priceless as it is much more then a name!

great post
the seedz example is so much a loss of commonsense for the site owner, loss of ad revenue and as you state doms need to pass radio test ,tv test.
and just be obvious otherwise traffic goes to elsewhere., in this case seeds.com
