I think this is one reason why the Geo domain auction last month didn't do as well as it could - they focused heavily on singular names (and explained that by saying that the singular version gets 5-6 times the search traffic). The problem is that it can be very difficult to be a "category killer" if you only own the singular (though your as you point out, there are exceptions). The singular version of HiltonHeadResort or ArubaVacation may be fine for trying to flip to a specific resort or a specific travel company, they just don't cut it as a category defining brand, as a listing site that can generate revenue from multiple advertisers, or as the authority when users have a choice between clicking the singular or the plural. Which would you choose between Hotel and Hotels if they were both .com. I know I'd choose Hotels because I don't want to be stuck with just a specific hotel as my only choice.

If you are really unsure about which to choose, just choose a keyword that is plural and singular at the same time.. Fish.com :)

Great post!

It goes to show that nuances of language are very important, especially when it comes to domaining.
