A domain name can be the Most Important choice you make before you start your site. Right out of the gate you have a vital choice to make but the majority of the time it’s over looked and No budget is in place for your domain name.

If it wasn’t over looked, one may have had the "perfect domain name" in mind, visited the domain and appeared to be owned by somebody already. At this point, most will move on to choice number two they had in mind for the domain.

Not in every case, but the majority I would bet the domain names picked were NOT the Best domain’s in the first place! They were simply domain names they "Want".

Choice number one, two, three and four wouldn’t of helped you anyway. What do I mean by "helped"?

Let me explain:  nobody would of found you on the internet anyway, at least not the Right People. You wouldn’t of had people waiting at your virtual door with money in hand ready to buy!

The fact is, the majority of people simply do not know how the internet / web works. I can only help explain it in one word: Keywords

Here comes the "Need"!

Keywords that should be thought of when you start your site are going to be what you should decide to purchase for your domain name. The keywords need to match what your site or service is going to offer. Generic is important without being extremely specific (in most cases). Keep in mind that you can own more then one domain name for your site, but that is not overly that important for picking your Main Domain.

Your main domain name should be able to explain what your site offers without explaining it. It should also not corner you to not offer something else.

You do not want to own AutoParts.com if you are selling Dolls.

ComputerStore.com

Owning ComputerStore.com speaks volumes! It is keyword strong for what people already naturally search for on the net. The domain name doesn’t hold you to only selling computers or just parts. ComputerStore.com would allow the site owner to offer Anything Computer Related! Pc’s, routers, cables, software, monitor’s, parts etc. ComputerStore.com is very easily remembered. It’s easy to spell, say and market with. It allows you to have a global market. Owning ComputerStore.com can nearly instantly put Trust into your site! ComputerStore.com allows you to create a Brand.

What kind of domain name do people choose that do not understand the internet?

GBPCPartsShop.com

What does that domain mean? You tell me! I bet if I searched hard enough on the web, I would find A LOT of domain names similar to it and A Lot of people trying to start a site today that have a similar domain!

Since I have to explain it to you, in my lone head I know what it means.. Green Bay, PC Parts Shop. So having GreenBayPersonalComputerPartsShop.com is a bit long… many figure it’s best to use acronyms and so forth.

How many people do you think would A.) search for that term on the net? B.) remember that domain name or C.) naturally type in the domain into a browser?

ZERO

It is not only Vital that you choose a great domain name for your site, the money spent to own a great domain name WILL save you money and likely Make you more money by owning it. Why? It’s all about the KEYWORDS!

A short, generic, .com (in most cases), keyword strong domain name will be remembered very easily. This makes advertising more effective. Direct Navigation is Real. If people are looking for Shoes, A Lot of people simply type in Shoes.com, instead of "searching for it" on search engine.

Now I do not want to paint a false picture here. You should keep in mind that domain names are rated in a class (if you ask me).

# 1 is always what is referred to as a "Category Killer". This is the generic term that IS the industry.

RealEstate.com is the Category Killer for the Real Estate industry. How many can own RealEstate.com? Only 1. How many "Want" to own it? A LOT. How many companies "Need" RealEstate.com? Nearly every real estate company in the world!

Owning the right domain name means it’s an Asset! One that you can sell nearly anytime. Keep in mind, if you sell.. 99.9% of the time you will Never have a chance to buy it back. That is only one reason why a lot of domain names hold a pretty price tag! Most category killer domain names start at $1 Million USD or higher. The bigger the market, the bigger the price tag. Another domain name that would rank righ up here in the #1 area is Property.com.

# 2 Second grade domain names are what most consider Gem’s, but these kind of domain names are still affordable for many companies. With Real Estate, this is a kind of domain name that you can get more specific about without hurting you.

If your company is an expert in Commercial Real Estate, then you want CommercialRealEstate.com . Why? It makes sense, people search for it already (natural branding) and it’s Keyword Strong. The domain is too long? Nope, it’s perfect for the internet! If you think it’s too long for you to "brand" that’s fine, because as I said before, you can own and use more then one domain name. Domain Forwarding allows you to "market" with let’s say PropertyPros.com . PropertyPros.com can be your brand because it’s shorter and easy to remember. Other domain names that fit in # 2 would be based on search volume for the specific terms.. like BeachFrontRealEstate.com and State + Real Estate .com’setc.

# 2 domains can range from $xxx, xxx to $xx,xxx (some domains depending on keywords could potentially go up to the million dollar range but this is just a guide.

# 3 domains can still include the Real Estate keyword but get more specific. Likely GEO location. City + RealEstate.com. The higher the population, likely the higher the domains value. These domains can range from $x,xxx to mainly $xx,xxx but could go higher depending on the specific domain, traffic etc.

# 4 These domains can include "filler" type keywords like CheapRealEstate.com or any other fitting word. Keep in mind you want your domain name to make sense with what you are offering. These type of domain names can run in the range of $xxx to $x,xxx

# 5 you don’t want to be buying unless the domain name For Sure has Natural Traffic.

The most important thing to keep in mind are Keywords! The shorter you can match a specific category keyword the better with your domain name. You can brand with a specific keyword domain like Your Personal Name, as that also makes sense but be sure to keep your mind open and think of the whole industry.

Not every site could or want’s or needs to be the best and the category killer, but It all depends on your Want or Need and KNOWING what your Need really is.
