I watch expired domain names like a hawk! Here are the main reasons why I see domain names expire.
#1 reason is your email address! After registering your domain name, many people set up an email address. A good deal of the time, that email address happens to go on that new domain you purchased. The problem with doing this is if this domain ever expires, you will not get the renewal notice because the domain names name servers reset automatically to the registrars basic park page. So unless you were using those name servers in the first place, you will not get any reminders!
Cure: Set up one email address. I prefer it to be on an actual domain name, not a free account like gmail or hotmail. Register that domain for 5-10 years and Use the email often.
#2 reason is your Credit Card that you have on file with your registrar. Credit Cards expire about every 1-3 years, because the strips on the back wear out and to help prevent fraud.
Cure: The first thing you should do when you get that new credit card in the mail to replace the expired one, head over to your registrar(s) and UPDATE the numbers!
Many people think the Auto Renew feature at registrars would help from not letting your domain name expire. FYI, your renewal will NOT happen if your CC on file is rejected. As you read this, YOU probably have an expired CC on file at one or more of the registrars you have your domain with! Go update it or at least verify!
#3 Multiple registrars! You may have won some domain names at auction, hand registered some, purchased from a seller and so on. If this is the case, then it’s very likely your domain names are with more then one registrar. Everybody has there favorite registrar, so it’s likely you use that one the most and never really check the others. This is just asking for trouble…
Cure: Consolidate! I know it takes a little time and money, but this will Greatly reduce the risk of "The Forgotten Domain". Again, this likely happens because of #1 & 2 above. Credit Card expired that you have on file, or a bad email address and you never get the renewal email, or you think it’s on auto renew, but then the CC is denied.
By using these 3 little tips, can help save you from losing a valuable asset or prevent you from having to spend large sums of money to get your domain back!
