Here is another round and my final round of DotWeekly Discoveries. This was a fun series I started to try something new and see how it went. This is my 22nd article and a couple things I think are making it lose it’s luster.

A.) It is not easy to bring you different companies as it is hard to track and dig so many different places so it doesn’t get repetitive.

B.) Traffic is good to the articles but not great. I know why but unless you own a site, it’s hard to explain.

C.) It takes a lot of time to do these and my sack of peanuts is seeing the threads on the bottom of the bag.

D.) I can’t control how many or what companies buy. They buy A LOT more than I post but they are just ugly domains or ones that I do not think will ever be used and so on.

So anyway, if you like series, I’m glad you enjoyed them as they were fun to do and I thank you for reading them. Here is the final installment with some newly registered and acquired domain names by some large companies. Sorry if this final one lacks some luster but I put in the time, there just wasn’t much action.

Amazon

Hand registered the domain name AmazonCloudService.com

Red Bull

Appears to have purchased the domain name FreshTalentWanted.com from HugeDomains.com for $1,895. The transaction took place at Afternic/BuyDomains.

Microsoft

Appears to have acquired the domain name Sql11.com and now forwards that domain to http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/default.aspx

Dr. Pepper/7Up Inc.

Hand registered the domain name 7UpMDA.com

Bayer AG

Hand registered the domain name Minkla.com (Bayer registers a lot of domain names like this, likely future brand names)

Time, Inc.

Appears to have acquired the domain name Moneyist.com . It was parked at Sedo, but the listing is still active at Sedo, so this tells me it likely sold privately or at another service like BuyDomains.

Conagra Foods

Hand registered the domain name CenterForSpiceLoss.com

Unknown

Gust.com appears to have changed ownership to a large company from Tucows, but generic whois data currently is hiding who the likely buyer is.

H.J Heinz Company

Hand registered the domain name TellUsHowYouDip.com

KGB, Inc. (KGB.com)

Appears to have acquired the domain name OSC.com

Tid bit

iCloud.com has changed DNS (domain name servers) so I expect some new action on that domain name soon! Will it be transferred to Apple, Inc. is the question. Xcerion was using Worldnic.com domain name servers to forward the domain to CloudMe.com, but now DNS has changed to BDNS1.UltraDNS.net and BDNS2.UltraDNS.net but the domain still forwards to CloudMe.com as of this article . Neustar owns and offers the managed dns service.

I am sure that these take quite a bit of research. I am guilty of reading and never making comments on such threads.

Just 2 let you know we are reading them.

    Thanks

Jamie your a smart guy imo and did a good job with this, but these things will never get viral or huge where you can make big advertising money. From modding and writing in this industry for a long time, I realized that this industry has a lot of things not work that work in other areas.

I look at Twitter for one, which plenty of domainers have a user name, but in asking domainers how much it means to them, it ranks low, for a lot of other business it ranks high.

There are probably too many blogs covering such a small niche where most of the readers care about three things: 1)Drama thread,2)Freebies,3)Big sales.

Sure there are some that like it all or most everything but I doubt that number big enough to make a living.

I have read places that seemed upset the blogger or site owner was making money, like you should do this for some public service, yet when you ask them what they do for free ? No answer.

    Best of luck

I too have been reading and appreciating these articles but you are probably half right I think. I believe the solution lies somewhere in-between. It is probably too much work to write these however there is a definite value to this information if the time to gather it was not the big problem or idiot come across this stuff anyways in your daily work for what you do with domains. If that be the case then I’d say it may be worth creating a databae/registry of this information (without all the text) like Namebio is for just domain sales and make it searchable. There will be a value to that and we may be surprised someday by the many ways it is used.

Wow really bad autocorrect in my comment above, huge apologies. I don’t know how to say this but where it says “idiot” it should say “you”. Geesh there is just no way to even explain this autocorrect without me sounding like an idiot, which I am for not proofreading.

    @JP,
In a way, the database that is created is “whois” but it would just be putting it into a format that is more fitting for “companies” and daily new domains. The hard part is, many hide behind generic whois data and some digging is needed to see who is behind them. I could likely create a general database based on companies but I will have to look into it a bit more and see what it would all take to do it.

I do think there would be value to it. For one if a large enough database people will start to make their own studies from it regarding how big brands are using and buying domains.

BTW, I never get email updates from posts I comment on this blog regardless of that I had checked the box to receive them. I wonder if I am the only one having this problem. Perhaps only you (the admin) is getting them. I’m definitely normally way to lazy to check back on my own for comments but wanted to check back on this one after my autocorrect bungle.

    @JP,
I will see what I can do. I did some digging and reached out to a service that could greatly assist with this, so we will see.

As for the notifications, I have had others mention that in the past. I have changed the “from” email address to see if that may have been an issue, so let me know if it’s fixed.

Unfortunately Still not getting notifications. Just now thought to check again. Try the wordpress plugin that let’s you enter a different smtp server than the same computer that wp is on, even if the settings you choose are for the same server. The plugin comes with a cool test utility to test outgoing mail. I’ll let you know as soon as I get an email notification for this thread.
