I wanted to provide a couple examples of what I am doing, how I am choosing keywords and ranking really quickly in the search engines. It shows the power of a blog and providing what people are searching for can get you ranked if a couple things line up.

First, you can not start a blog today and rank for a specific term. This can only happen over a little bit of time. If your site get’s some traffic and you have a couple SEO things in place, it can.

On Feb 12, 2009 I wrote a blog post about Paula Abdul Jewelry. I talked about how it looked like a staged mini commercial during American Idol. As of yesterday and today, I am (DotWeekly.com) ranked on the first page on Google for that term. Paula Abdul Jewelry (8th).

On Feb 12, 2009 one of the Google Trends was the long tail keyword phrase Paula Abdul Jewelry. <— 2 Hints. You can read more about Google Trends in this post I did as well.

Provide what people are looking for! This include links, and if you can, use an affiliate link for the product or service. This turns into $$$ if you get ranked for the term. Now in this case, HSN.com didn’t approve me for the affiliate for some reason, but They Should Of because as I said in that post, we could sold some jewelry! I did the posting to prove a point anyway!

Do not be overly all that long with the posting. Remember, computers do the scanning!

Provide help! This basically mean, provide what the people searching are looking for!

Be sure to match the Google Trend, Long Tail Keyword phrase in 3 Places. Title, First Paragraph and the URL (which is basically the title in most cases).

Picking the proper phrase is important because you really do not want to be picking keywords that will only be searched "once". I picked the Paula Abdul Jewelry phrase because, 1., American Idol’s season has just started and it’s likely the jewelry will be talked about again! Secondly, Paula goes on HSN from time to time and promotes it. So traffic spikes will keep happening.

Important point, Pick long tail keyword phrase that have LOW Google results (amount of returns for the term). The lower the better! If you can find a term that makes sense to write about, that has 10K results, using the above will likely rank you Very Fast. I have ranked sometimes within a couple hours to the # 1 spot!

Here are some other long tail keyword phrase I have been playing around with to see how this works. You can look at each (basically the "how they look" on the search engine page) and then the posting as well.

etrade baby golf commercial #3 on Google. I was number 1 for several days, until google replace me with 2 youtube.com listings. I should of used Google Adsense with YouTube, but again it was a trial. I did go back, but I couldn’t get the exact videos to show, so I pulled the code. (several hundred uniques a day)

eight oclock coffee 3rd page of google and improving, but over 2 million returns. I still get traffic from it. (about 75 uniques a day)

bailoutbooth.com #2 on Google. (several hundred uniques a day)

backtaxes.com #4 on Google and on the JKHarris.com blog about the post I wrote. (about 100 uniques)

Those are a couple examples. Now don’t get me wrong.. I have tried several that also didn’t work for whatever reason. You win some you lose some I guess! If the search results are low, your chancess increase Greatly! Picking the right Long Tail is very important and providing helpful info is as well! Keep in mind that once ranked, it’s likely that will stay there for sometime as well, greatly increasing your chances of making $$$

I also started using the WordPress plugin Headspace2 which I think has been helping my SEO.

If you found this post helpful, please feel free to Donate to DotWeekly.com. This is the first time I have ever put up a donate button, but I think this information is extremely helpful, but I also think most info provided on DW is helpful :) Any amount helps.

This is what Owen Frager has been doing for months… Writing about things that are irrelevant to domaining but get him ranked for “trendy” key phrases and driving traffic to his site.

    Jamie,

I just visited the JK Harris blog page that mentions your blog posting about BackTaxes.com.

They include a link to your blog posting and also conclude with this statement:
“We are looking forward to being of service to all you folks out there with IRS tax issues. Just contact us at http://www.JKHarris.com if you need help.”

The funny thing is the “www.JKHarris.com” link
does NOT go to their site.

It links to your blog posting about BackTaxes.com.

The “www.JKHarris.com” link as it appears here does link to their website but it does not on their blog.

Why would you think “getting ranked for “trendy” key phrases and driving traffic to YOUR site” is not relevant to domaining?

This technique usually only works if your site holds some weight in the search engines to begin with. Plus if your site is SEO to the max it will more than likely be picked up faster than most. I have been using these techniques for a while now and see the importance in doing this. Especially if the “long tail” keywords end up becoming extremely popular. IMO, search traffic is almost better than type-in traffic.

You need to put the search phrase within quotes to get a better idea of what’s going on as far as popularity goes.

    “etrade baby golf commercial”

Only has three results total in google as well as yahoo.

    Best,
