9/4/2011 Update: Google is now shown in whois as owning Gmail.us again!

Google appears to have lost control of the domain name Gmail.us

According to whois records on DomainTools.com and whois history records, Google Inc. owned the domain name Gmail.us and then on August 26, 2011 a Russian name and different email address were displayed in whois other than Google.

Whois records indicate on 8/25/2011 that Google owned the Gmail.us Domain as pictured below

Whois records then indicated on 8/26/2011 that Google no longer owned Gmail.us as pictured below

The domain doesn’t expire until June 24, 2012 so it wouldn’t appear that this was an expiring problem. So one would have to think that there was potentially a hacking? I don’t see a reason why Google would remove it’s name from whois and change it to Ilya Geraschenko of Russina Federation. The domain name is registered outside of Google’s normal domain name registrar MarkMonitor.com . Gmail.us is registered with Directi and its PublicDomainRegistry.com .

As of today, 8/27/2011 the domain name Gmail.us is still showing the Russian owner as owning Gmail.us according to whois records.

I’ve found your post by Google. This case is just a terrible mistake of our system administrator who have changed whois data to mine accidentally

No russians are buying Google actually.
