What a title that is! It is like a dream really for many people who create a website or are offering some BS eBook. Create the site and with ZERO advertising and NO "link building" and BOOM, page 1 of Google for the keywords I was focusing on. No "quotes" around the search term and no fancy tricks used and I got it done!

The thing is for me, I really did it. No cheating, no shady techniques etc!

Some may be surprised, but the site doesn’t even really have any content yet either. The search term has a frequency of 783,000 results, so I think this is a fair amount and not an easy task to do in only 10 days with a hand reg domain and no content.

Well, I did it and I’m not going to sell you any eBook to do it yourself. That is why it pays to read DotWeekly.com . If you want my advise or service, you can always contact me! Anyway…

So how did I do it? What did I do?

I will explain how I started this little project and then what I did.

I was looking for a massage service in my local town of Green Bay for my wife, so I searched Green Bay Massage (also know as Geo+Keyword for domains) and found a couple massage services but just wasn’t happy with the ones that I found. Being a domain investor and wanna be developer :) , I thought the sites that were ranking on page 1 of Google (which get most of the traffic), I could easily outrank them over a short period of 2-3 months using the knowledge that I have and using the right domain name with better, simple SEO than the other sites currently ranking!

The exact match domain name GreenBayMassage.com happened to be available for hand registering but the fact is… I do not own a massage company, so I wasn’t going to register the domain name. Then I thought, I can register this domain name, get in touch with a local massage company that doesn’t have a website yet and help them out. I would offer the site for free and offer my knowledge and provide the help the company needs. Hello Good Karma! This would also allow me to gain some knowledge because I can see the approach the company would have taken compared to what I would offer as my best suggestions.

I registered the domain name on 4/12/2010. It took me two days to find a Green Bay Massage company that was willing to work with me and take on my free service and advice, yet provide me the help with the information they would have used without me. (yes, several turned it down)

The development of the site

Using the Google Adwords Tool and since the business is GEO (geographical) focused and located, I decided GreenBayMassage.com was the best domain name to use. The term matches what people naturally already search for and it makes sense with what the business offers. Your domain name is Very Important and it should be picked wisely. Yes, somebody may own it already, so it can be wise to have a decent budget in place for buying your domain name. In my case, it was available to register at any domain name registrar.

I have a simple $9.95 a month hosting package with Hostgator (BabyCroc), which I have about 15-20 sites running on.

I used WordPress for the site (free), using 4 plugins (free).

  1. Contact 7
  2. Really Simple Captcha
  3. Headspace2
  4. Google XML Sitemaps

Since I wasn’t set up to meet with the massage company until last Thursday.. I didn’t have the content that would be going on the site, so I simply created the sites pages (as I thought they should be) so I could have a jump start on development before meeting with the client. For each page, I focused on keywords to match the service with the page titles and the meta description and was sure to fill them in with what I thought would be best before publishing the pages.

I used Google Webmaster Tools and simply added the site to my account and added a line of code to the header section of the site for verification.

Development wise, that was really all that I did because the massage company that I am working with is going to fill in the content on the site this week. The site has 8 pages (includes blog) and each meta description I focused on my main keywords to match my keyword specific domain name.

Today is 4/22/2010, 10 days after hand registration and GreenBayMassage.com currently ranks # 6 for the matching search term on Google.com

That is it really!

Green Bay Massage | GreenBayMassage.com

  • Exact Match .com keyword domain name
  • WordPress
  • 4 plugins
  • 8 pages with page titles and meta descriptions filled out
  • No Content
  • Verified the site with Google Webmaster
  • Page 1 listing on Google in 10 days for the exact match keyword term I was focusing on

Now I just didn’t think my keyword set "sounded good" and that was the reason I picked the term. About 2,400 month searches per month at Google alone contain the exact match search term Green Bay Massage already. Free of charge, natural searches! The exact match searches are a couple hundred, but that couple hundred is MORE THAN the 0 that search for the companies name I am working with!

Using an exact match keyword domain name not only helps you rank better in search engines, people are already searching for that term! The domain name makes sense to the user, because it is a service they are naturally looking for! Yes, with GEO related terms, people use the term backwards and in several ways… massage green bay, massage green bay wi, green bay wi massage etc.. but you can use your meta descriptions to focus on that and Google is also smart enough to match backwards terms to a common term.

Since the site’s business is "local", it is wise to submit your site and business using the Google Local Business Center (aka Google Places now). I had the business own submit to this, as it is free.

Clearly adding the content to the site should continue to help raise the search engine rank and reach my (our) goal of hitting the # 1 spot in Google for the natural search engine ranking. The business is also adding the domain name to all marketing material like business cards, coupons, brochures etc.

I will also put some focus on Video and Images to cover those aspects of search.

I hope this information helps you in some way, or at least motivates you to get developing using some of this knowledge to help improve your business. If you already have a main site, it doesn’t hurt to put some focus on long-tail keyword terms and build mini-sites and use linking back to your main site to gain that traffic. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me as each business and search terms are different.

What kind of traffic is the site getting.
Also get some content up asap. Google likes to give a good placement and then take it away.

    @Brian,
There is a little bit of traffic, but again I only hand registered the domain 10 days ago. The content will be going up.. I hope starting today and continue for a couple days. There after, the business owner was instructed to use the Blog and blog at least once a week to keep providing some new, unique content.

“About 2,400 month searches per month at Google alone contain the exact match search term Green Bay Massage already”

I think Google WAY OVERESTIMATES these numbers, especially with geo keyword domains. I would put the real number at about 5% of their estimate.

I own lots of these types of sites and have many in the #1 slot and 5% still seems pretty accurate.

    @Troy,
I agree the suggested numbers may be off but I would rather see them instead of nothing. It can be a good guide to use, as long as you do not expect to “get” that amount of traffic out of search traffic alone.

    Thanks JB

Nice article. Congrats on the success in this project.

I just wanted to add, did anyone notice the “power strokes” massage? Makes you think what kind of massage company they are. :-p

Thank you Larry. So far so good but the work will not stop until at the top. Not a huge keyword but is proving a couple things that do work.

    @Attila,
Yep, I saw that one as well. LOL

I’ve said it all before, but when it comes to discussing the underlying concept of exact match long tail domain names, the reactions I get from many others in the domain business reminds me of situations in which the old guard of the scientific community is unwilling to consider new and better theories despite plenty of evidence to the contrary.

For purposes of indexing websites, DOT-COM domain names consisting of two, three or more long tail keywords that EXACTLY MATCH the search query entered into Google’s search box represent the absolute strongest possible threshold match for relevance (IMHO).

In response to this comment, I’ve had plenty of SEO guys say to me, “Why would all these other companies continue to spend millions of dollars on SEO if what you say is actually true? Why wouldn’t they just register or acquire the most popular exact match keyword domain names within a given industry – then simply insert relevant content and call it a day?”

I think that’s an excellent question!

A few weeks ago, feeling a little nostalgic, I picked up the domain name, “HertzDonut.com” and put together a small website in just a few minutes. One week later, HertzDonut.com appeared on the first page of Google search results for the exact keyword phrase AHEAD OF MORE THAN 15,000 OTHER PUBLISHED PAGES THAT CONTAIN THE EXACT SAME TWO WORD PHRASE!

    To summarize:

    1. Number one page result placement without SEO.

    2. One page.

    3. Relevant, but minimal content.

For reasons unknown to me, many of the industry’s leading domain experts continue to ignore the impact of this important finding – rendering many of us incapable of seeing the potential value of these very special keyword combinations.

If my memory of a specific classic fable serves me correctly, eventually it was discovered that the emperor was wearing no clothing. It just took a little time and the willingness of his subjects to make their own personal observations.

Nice work! I have quite a few geodomains on the back burner right now. I’m curious though – what kind of deal do you have with the massage place you’re working with? Are they paying you monthly, per lead, or will they buy the site in the future?

Also, GreenBayDaySpa.com is available if you want to snag that one and cover all bases ;)
