I use WordPress for something like 90% of my projects and businesses. It's just so simple to customize and manage. I usually don't like the word "blog" and for most of my WordPress powered websites I try to make them look professional, like membership sites or communities. There are soo many amazing plugins and unique (functional themes) for WordPress that you can turn a basic installation into virtually any type of website in a few hours or less. As for FTP, I recommend http://SmartFTP.com Great tutorial for new domainers/developers. I use WordPress for something like 90% of my projects and businesses.
