I have watched "insurance" domain names continue selling like hot cakes for several months and really all of 2010! 2009 they did the same thing! The sales just keep on happening and it seems that just about any domain name with the keyword insurance in it could sell.
Sedo is leading the way as the place to sell and this may just be an indication that most of the sales are to end users.
Most of the sales are .com domain names but are not solely limited to .com .
Insurance was the 7th most popular category in Sedo.com’s 2009 Q4 report.
Most sales are in the four figure range, but some are reaching five figure ranges. Some of the latest sales include:
Insurance.me $4,300
InsuranceRateQuote.com $3,500
LombardInsurance.com $2,000
YoungDriversInsurance.net $2,135
FindInsurance.com $7,209
CommercialInsurance.org $4,850
StorageInsurance.com $7,500
LocalInsuranceQuotes.com $6,000
iPadInsurance.com $1,500
The above are just a handful of some of the latest insurance keyword domain name sales and there are plenty more as well. Some of the bigger insurance domain name sales include:
PetInsuranceComparison.com $11,000
ChildrensLifeInsurance.com $17,500
HealthInsuranceCoverage.com $18,000
InsuranceLeads.com $50,000
MotorcycleInsurance.org $34,000
And many, many more!
Also to note, CarInsurance.com sold this year to QuinStreet. It wasn’t a "domain only sale" but the price paid for the transaction was $49.7 million and that included CarInsurance.com . Andrew at DomainNameWire.com provided some nice coverage about the CarInsurance.com domain, reason for the purchase and the traffic / SERP’s the domain has.
QuinStreet also purchased Insurance.com in 2010 (another sale that wasn’t domain only) for $35.6 million. Andrews coverage on this domain and transaction on Insurance.com .
In 2009, QuinStreet also purchased the Insure.com domain name and website for $16 million.
In late 2009, 360 Quote LLC purchased 52+ insurance domain names (mainly GEO+Insurance) for around $216,000 as well. Most of these domain names were purchased at Afternic.
Add in domain names that are related to insurance like "quote", "claim", "coverage" etc and I can see why the insurance category was in the top 10 for Q4 2009 at Sedo. I even had American Family Insurance contact me about a domain name I own (AllReferrals.com) but we couldn’t come to an agreement and I wasn’t going to sell on the $25 offer that was sent. I felt my $1,188 offering price was more than fair.
Insurance companies do not always stick to "insurance" keyword related domain names either, as I have reported on a lot of different domain names used by insurance companies! Some of those include: (linked to the stories I wrote about each)
WhyAgent.com (State Farm)
HealthInNumber.com (Unitedhealth Care Insurance)
CodeSpotter.com (Nationwide Insurance)
DiscountDoubleCheck.com (State Farm)
KnowQuack.com (Aflac Insurance)
HelpFlo.com (Progressive Insurance)
WorldsGreatestSpokesperson.com (Nationwide Insurance)

Great post and good observations Jmaie!
I too have been noticing an increase in insurance related domains of late and reg’d PetInsuranceRate.net and TravelInsuranceRate.net just this morning. Not amazing but not bad for hand reg’s in this era of domaining.
I think I remember the 360 Quote LLC buying spree of last year. Just remember seeing all the great Geo insurance names in the sales reports and wondering who was behind them!

when you look at all of the smaller deals and the recent carinsurance.com deal, it really speaks to the bargain that insurance.com sold for at 35 million this year, btw I like mine bestratesource.com as a nice potential platform for an lead gen company down the road, also got lowestratesource.com…excuse the small plug..

Even local type insurance domains such as MemphisTermLifeInsurance.com are hot at the moment.
I have stocked up on quite a few City Geo names and am getting more interest all of the time.
