The Big Three is about to change in about 10-15 days. Ever since I checked domain name registrar stats, Godaddy.com was always the clear leader by nearly 3x’s more domain names under control then # 2 eNom with about 9 million domains.
Network Solutions Inc. has held the # 3 spot since I had been looking in the start of 2008. Not for long! # 4 Tucows is coming and coming fast. NetworkSolutions.com has been losing (dropped domains, transfered out) domain names over 30 day periods in the thousands. I have always put this towards their $34.99 pricing and I’m sure the economy has more of an effect to that now.
Network Solutions has Lost 4,087 domains in the past 30 days while Tucows.com has Gained 47,405.
NSI currently manages a total of 6,656,861 domain names
Tucows currently manages a total of 6,641,139 domain names.
That is a 15,722 domain name difference and the closest fight for ranking in the top 10 of domain registrars by volume.
4 out of the top 10 domain registrars have Lost domains by volume in the past 30 days which is actually pretty good news!
There are 989 ICANN accredited domain name registrars.
*All domain name stats stated above include the domain name extensions: .com .net .info .org .biz .us .mobi

Also interesting to note of the 989 ICANN accredited domain registrars, the registrar that we transferred all domains to, is already in the top 100 of all of these domain registrars, after less than 2 months of operation.
Also interesting to note that this registrar only 100 less new domains added in the past for weeks than NSI. (http://www.webhosting.info/registrars/fastest-growing-registrars/global/?pi=3)
So lets no forget the power that domainers have over registrars.

Maybe by # of domains, but what about revenue? It is all relative.
NetSol 6,656,861(Domains)X $32(Avg Price)= $213,019,552
Giant Registar 25Million Domains X $8.50 (Avg Price) = $212,500,000 Revenue

I’m amazed more people don’t run for dear life away from NetSol. At $35/year, looks like they’re #1 in terms of total profits.
Nice to hear less junk is being regged. Economy or tasters to blame? Both maybe?
Interesting times
