This might of been the funniest thing I have seen all week. I always get a kick out of when people try to compare One domain name to Another…
Now this is nothing against the owner of this domain name or to the person who wrote the newsletter (because I don’t know who wrote the comparison) but this just cracked me up. Here you go…..
Jokes.mobi
BIN: $22,000
Games.mobi recently went for $44,000 <——-
Now unless I’m missing something but the last time I checked Games cost money which in return Make Money for the owner(s)! Jokes are FREE and are almost every place you can think of.. .. … … … Games are free a good deal of the time, but I know a lot more people that will Pay to Play a game, then to get a Joke or two.
I just found that comparison about as crazy as they come and a good Joke to top it off.
(BTW, Jokes.com forwards to ComedyCentral.com if you were wondering)

This is the funniest thing you’ve seen all week? You should get out more often.
There is really nothing too off-base with this comparison. At the end of the day, they are comparing two 5-letter generic domains within the same gTLD. Remember, it’s about what you do with a domain that can determine it’s value. If jokes.mobi is a compelling enough site and the traffic is harnessed, it’s a win. Jokes can be free but advertisers want eyeballs and they’ll pay dearly for them.

Hi David,
Great points about “what you do with a domain that can determine it’s value” and the advertising eyeballs. Also keep in mind that “Jokes” is searched for 9,840 times per day, compared to 27,422 for “Games” (according to Wordtracker). That’s 3x’s more the amount of searches alone and I see people playing Games way more on a phone then reading jokes. I personally do not think they compare beyond the .mobi, 5 (I had a typo and put 6 but fixed it) characters and they are generic.

Any .mobi domain selling for more than $100 is hilarious IMO.

LOL

I think if you are trying to target endusers then there’s no harm in showing a comparison, most end users don’t care about wordtracker, number of searches and all the other “domainer” terms
I do that sometimes myself sometimes

Brandable Domain – BMX360.com BUY NOW 2,600 $US

I sold calls.mobi for $11,000 after I registered it for $79.00 for 2/years. Feel free to laugh out loud but I’m the one that’s grinning. By the way, jokes and games are 5-letter domains not 6 letter .
One other example I’d like to share; I was offered $50.00 for a .tv domain name a few years back. The next week I sold it to someone else for $225,000.00. My point is, a domain is as unique as a piece of art and is “worth” what someone is willing to pay.

My bad on the 5-6 deal. Hit the wrong button. Do you mind sharing the .tv sale? I didn’t recall hearing of such a high sale. I heard Televisions.tv sold for $25K but not $225K.

David,
A .TV domain for a quarter of a million? Now I am laughing, at the fool that paid it=).

Troy are you laughing at the guy who paid $7.5m for business.com? Or the company that paid $350m+ for it a few years later? Visionaries are those who have….VISION.
Damir
David J Rosenbaum is spot on.
A domain is as unique as a piece of art and is “worth” what someone is willing to pay.

I don’t think Jamie is bashing .mobi he’s just laughing at how sellers compare apples to oranges. Still fruit but entirely two different tastes. From what I’ve heard, jokes.mobi gets a fair amount of natural traffic. All it needs is an easy, fun, social user interface and it won’t take much to pick up a lot of g-phone, i-phone users… .mobi will see it’s day. Mark my words.
