KPN.info has been sold at Sedo.com for $15,000 EUR. This is a fairly high price for a 3 letter .info domain name compared to what the majority of 3 letter .info domain names sell for. The minimum wholesale currently for 3 letter .info domains is about $90 according to 3Charcter.com.

Interestingly enough, in early of 2008 according to a WIPO Arbitration and Mediation report, a company from the Netherlands filed a WIPO complaint to claim the domain name KPN.info. Koninklijke KPN N.V. happened to be the company that tried to obtain the domain but failed to do so by a 3 panelist group from WIPO. The decision was handed down on April 12, 2008 with the claim being denied. View KNP.info Complaint.

Although it has been nearly 2 years since Koninklijke KPN N.V. tried to obtain KPN.info via WIPO and failed at doing so, they have now paid $15,000 EUR to purchase KPN.info from the domains owner according to whois records.

At today’s conversion rate, the price paid for the domain itself is $20,358 USD.

What does it cost to file a WIPO arbitration? It cost about $4,000 USD to file a WIPO case with 1-5 domains with 3 panelist. WIPO FAQ’s

Clearly if you have legal counsel, they have there fees as well.

In the end, the domain name sold for $15,000 EUR (likely from a pissed off domain owner) but since Koninklijke KPN N.V. had filed the WIPO, clearly a good deal was paid for that process but in the end had to pay for the domain name as well.

I am not sure why they wanted KPN.info so badly, because they already own KPN.com and KPN.net but they own KPN.info now but had to wait several years and spend a lot of money to get it.

I personally think it is simply crazy that any company can think they can claim "trademark rights" to a 3 letter acronym domain. Why? Because 3 letter acronyms are used all the time and are very generic in nature and can really "mean" just about anything.

This case could be a very good example that sometimes you are likely better off paying a little higher price from the start, then draw out the process for a couple years with "legal" services fees that add up quickly. I understand the rights to "own" something but common sense sometimes is just as important. If a seller is asking for $5K (just an example number and nothing to do with KPN.info) for something you want or are claiming is yours, but to fight it legally you have to spend about $5K… you would be better paying the $5K for the For Sure purchase, instead of taking a chance with a panel making the decision.
