Update: the lphone.com auction ended for $681 on 77 bids. See original posting below.
Here is your chance to own a piece of history! lphone.com is currently on auction and you can purchase it because it’s a public auction!
Sweet Mother, how could this domain name be on auction at Godaddy.com!!!!
Drop the phone and hold onto your shorts as the auction is almost over! It ends 2/4/2010 at 10:35 AM PST!
What are you waiting for! You haven’t checked it out yet? Bid now on lphone.com when you can!
It’s lphone.com
Had you going for a little bit didn’t I!
I had to look twice at the domain name and even look back again to make sure!
Lowercase: lphone.com
Uppercase: LPHONE.com
Funny how domain names can look totally different if you use uppercase or lowercase or a mixture of both! Fonts make a difference as well. A capital I (i) can have tails or no tails. A capital I (i) can look like a lowercase l (L) like in this case with lphone.com .
Search engines always display a domain name in all lowercase, so one may look at lphone.com and "think" it’s iphone® for at least a couple seconds, until you notice the domain is all lowercase and it’s an L! If you haven’t had your morning coffee, it could take even longer then a couple seconds for you to figure it out and you may click! I have seen many people try to trick others with zero’s to look like o as well and the L and i combo change.
If you are in question, always use Direct Navigation with the real domain name you are intending to visit.

Jamz, lucky I read your story before unloading some serious WTF!
I checked out the domain in a font that ID’s any lowercase letters and makes them uppercase…. the come-on in your heading made me think I was reading some Nigerian spam email! lol
good job educating the masses. Always check the UPPERCASE on a domain before purchase.

I had you sussed as soon as I saw the headline.

YOu never had me going. So used to checking for IDN and upper/lowercase. The problem with these look-alike domains is that they are being used by phishers, then again maybe an Apple competitor will make an L-phone some day. Plus the domain does get some traffic. Estibot says it’s worth $850. Sounds about right.

Nice article on domain illusions. You did have me fooled for 2 seconds but then I assured myself Apple’s lawyers would have ripped a real iPhone.com owner apart years ago.

You got me on this one! I had to do a double-take once I saw the message in my inbox lol…

I had some fun Friday morning helping drive up the price on lphone.com…my last bid was $600. I don’t what it sold for as I got tired of playing and had to get some real work done… I didn’t want it and what would anyone use it for?
But as I said had a little fun running up the price… Oh I am sorry was that a bad thing that I did.
