It is Friday so I thought I would have a little fun! A search that I often do on Google to discover things to write about is website launched and then I click News.
I can often find plenty of things to write about just on the first page if I wish and the stories are really unlimited once you start looking into them further. One very common thing you will see are the domains used for these "new websites" being launched, are not so great!
So here are the first page results and the "domains" used for these new site launches. I add comments if the domain is good, bad and why.
~ CherrybombMovie.net (for a new movie coming out) I would of rather purchased Cherrybomb.org in the FreeDomainNewsletter.com yesterday for $50 and used that! A great deal of traffic will be lost to the .com domain, which they do not own. The .com is a Porn Site! Nice pick of domain guys! Lets just say the Twitter account name used is not all that great either.. cherrybombofc Domain Fail!
~ A future community center not under construction yet for a Ray And Joan Kroc Corps Community Center (Kroc Center) in Long Beach launched a site to help raise funds. The center will be run by the Salvation Army. Domain picked for the Kroc Center? LongBeachKroc.org . They also own and use the domain KrocCenter.org but is used for the San Diego location. Not overly all that bad of a domain choice, but could be better.
~ The federal government launched a revamped bilingual website for citizenship applicants and others navigating the immigration system. Domain name used? USCIS.gov . Domain Fail IMO. Acronyms over 3 letters are hard to remember. 4 is not all that bad, but 5 + .gov is hard for most!
~ The Midge Tolerant Wheat Stewardship Team (Farming) based in Canada. Domain used? MidgeTolertantWheat.ca . Good Choice since they focus on farmers local in Canada, which are likely familiar with the .ca extension. The domain make sense as it matches what the farmers are interested in.. Midge Tolertant Wheat!
~ The Office of Community Beautification, Board of Public Works, in LA created a self help website, Anti-graffiti.lacity.org — to help residents request graffiti removal from public or private properties.
Well, this isn’t a full website nor domain, but an added page to an existing site… Still a Domain Fail! Hyphenated Sub-Domain? If you are going to use a sub-domain, make it One Word! graffiti.lacity.org would of been better to use!
~ A new game where you get to run your own restaurant by preparing the dishes, managing the orders and even helping your waitress when she gets too busy called Fast Food Panic has launched its site. Domain used? FastFoodPanic.com ! A+ for these guys! Exactly what you are suppose to do. Exact match of the game and 95% of the time .com!
~ A new free, innovative and unique White Label Flatshare service has been launched, giving brand managers, website owners and budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to create and customise their own branded flatshare websites. Domain used? WhiteLabelFlatshare.co.uk . Based in the UK, so to use a .co.uk is up to them. CCTLDs are getting more popular by the day. Nice choice of domain.
~ ESPNBoston.com had a story about hiring Kraft Sports Group to sell ads for it’s local specific new site ESPNBoston. I see where ESPN is going with this approach and it’s nice. Hitting up local markets with better focus… Good use of the domain and makes sense. Will take a little branding adding the State name after ESPN for direct navigation. The domains will help with SEO.
~ Federal agriculture officials launched their “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” website. The multi-million dollar initiative from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is designed to help communities boost their economies by supporting local farmers and celebrating local food. Domain name used? NONE! Well, unless you think people will remember this.. usda.gov/wps/portal/knowyourfarmer?navid=KNOWYOURFARMER
Purchasing a Make Sense domain name like KnowYourFarmer.com and using a simple 301 Redirection to that very long link above would be the Right Thing To Do! At least people could find what they were looking for! Domain Fail!
This is a wide range look at what kinds of domains people are using. You get a wide mix of domain names, sub-domains and even just a "category" for the USDA site and this was only the first page of one term searched. Hope you enjoyed something a little different.
