Good News, Bad News, Product Launches, Babies born and just about everything else that makes national news get domain investors visiting their domain name registrars of choice and turn these terms into domain names when available!

Some of these domain names will be built into websites, some will be offered for sale minutes after purchasing, some will turn into domain parking pages and many will sit on a standard domain registrar parking page and simply be allowed to expire in 1 year.

Domain names cost about $7 for .com’s to register if not already owned with an $0.18 cent fee for each going to ICANN. This means a company like Godaddy.com that charges $10.69 without any coupon codes is bringing in about $3.69 per .com domain approx with the remaining $7 going to the registry for the TLD.

Yesterday, 69,423 "new" registered .com domain names were purchased, which would bring ICANN.org about $12K. Today, about the same amount will be registered and each day after that.

Now keep in mind that just about that amount (48,209 .com’s yesterday) Expires each day and the domain names area deleted from the registries.

Here is an example of what I am talking about when news breaks and makes registrars profits rise.

GM announced today that they expect the new Chevy Volt to get 230 MPG (miles per gallon). Considering that Cash For Clunkers is accepting clunkers that get 18 MPG or less, that’s a HUGE difference!

We all know these cars will not get 230 MPG, just as the new car’s never get what it says on the sticker in the first place!

Mark Rogers, according to Whois records thinks his investment in 230MPG.com is going to pay off for him. He purchased the domain name today (8-11-2009 the day GM announced) and has the domain name listed at the popular Sedo.com for sale already.

Mark also purchased the 230MPG.net . Oh and the .org….

Mark’s investment will likely never turn into any thing other then these domain names costing the money they did to register.

When the singer Michael Jackson died, eBay.com became filled with MJ related domains.

The problem is, 99% of these investments turn into either legal trouble for the domain name buyer because they include trademarked terms or simply wasted money with only the domain name registrars winning because the news dies just as fast.

When things like the Swine Flu made news, an investment like this is a bit more wise, but you still run the risk of having the "news" dye off just as fast as it broke.

I would advise people to NOT invest in the following type domain names.

~ PersonsName and then "adding" words like Dead, Died etc. It becomes old news and many will or can lead into legal troubles.

~ TrademarkedName and adding any word. Example, Google announced it’s "sandbox" of it’s search upgrade. The code name was Caffeine. So buying a domain name like GoogleCaffeine.com is NOT a smart choice. For one, Google is a registered trademark. Secondly, it’s not like the search engine Google is going to change it’s domain name! The testing period will come and go and it will still be Google!

~ Tragedy and adding any word. This is pretty sick when people do this! If there is a plane crash or when 9/11 happened etc. Why would you really want to profit off of peoples lives.

~ Numbers added to a word. 230MPG.com .. What if the number really turns out to be 239 or 150, 222 etc… In this case, the "better" domains are 230.com because of the news, Volt.com (generic term, which happens to be the name GM picked for the car) and secondly because they can be used for just about anything.

Things that you may consider investing in:

~ Already proven generic terms that have been around for a long time and that people search and talk about on a daily basis. Yes these type of domain name are likely already owned by somebody, but many are for sale. These are your best domain name investments.

~ Have insider info on some new hot technology? Code names often stick and become the "real" name of the product or service but not always!

Using the domain name owners whois database you may often be shocked about the timing of when a domain name was already registered.

SwineFlu.com was actually registered in March of 2000 but many of us only heard of the term with the recent break out in 2009!

Your end goal in domain name investing should be to make You some money in a legal way and not just the domain name registrar and ICANN. Yes the sun does shine a dogs ass once in a great while, but breaking news domain registration is a very big risk. $10 hear and there starts adding up as buying domain names gets addictive!
