Here are a bunch of stats you do not always see about domain names. The stats include domain names in the following TLD’s only: .com, .net, .info, .org, .us and .mobi. Domain stats are from 5-31-2009 (yesterday).

 Registrars

Godaddy.com remains king as always by volume! Currently they have control of 30,892,036 domain names compared to the second highest registrar by volume eNom.com with 9,007,892.

Tucows ranks #3 with 7,391,788 followed by NetworkSolutions with 6,578,123 and then by MelbourneIT with 4,819,088.

The remaining top 10 registrars by volume are:

• 1&1 with 4,768,663
• Wild West Domains (Godaddy sister company) 3,258,541
• Register.com with 2,750,889
• Moniker with 2,603,932
• PublicDomainRegistry.com with 2,325,444

There are currently 1,176 ICANN Accredited domain name registrars.

Domain Parking Companies

SedoParking holds the top spot with nearly 2 million domain names using it’s parking service. To be exact, 1,925,400. DomainSponsor.com which is owned by Oversee.net holds 1,880,685.

Parked.com comes in with 1,126,100 and it’s newly purchased company WhyPark.com also holds 88,470 domains using it’s service.

NameDrive.com holds 445,929 with TrafficZ.com holding 294,589.

Domain Name Hosting

These are specific companies that just offer hosting. Since most registrars offer hosting, it is hard to track due to name servers used, which domains are really using hosting.

DreamHost.com comes in the #1 spot by volume with 857,938 followed pretty closely by BlueHost.com with 770,046. HostMonster.com comes in 3rd with 545,383 domain names using it’s hosting service.

HostGator.com comes in with 520,219 and RackSpace.com with 414,768.

Expired Domain Names

3,402 domain names hit expired status at Tucows. Tucows currently has a total of 125,303 domain names in expired status.

Directi had a total of 4,400 domain names hit expired status. Directi has a total of 117,195 domain names in expired status.

NetworkSolutions.com had 2,445 domains hit expired status. NSI has a total of 78,719 domain names in expired status.

Register.com had 909 domains hit expired status and has a total of 43,266 currently in expired status.

Random Stats

4,828 domain names there were using the Parked.com service moved to eNom. Most likely the domain names hit Expired status.

330 domains moved from NameDrive to SedoParking

237 domains moved from WhyPark.com to Hostgator.com hosting.

NameMedia currently owns 907,885 domains which 892,125 of those are marked for sale.

The name servers Tucows uses to park it’s own domain names, has 479,589 domain names on it.

NetworkSolutions has 2,886,300 domain names on it’s server it uses for hosting and it’s basic parking lander pages.
