Another press release captured my eye during my normal new website launched search using Google News.
This story is about a popular Chicago area jewelry store who was bite by the crappy economy and had to close down the store at their popular mall location. They felt like they still wanted to have the jewelry store, so they ventured online after closing the mall store and opened a virtual jewelry store.
So what domain name did this company decide would easily allow for it’s customers to find them online? Hold on to your hats….
longsjewerlyandbricabrac.com Also known as LongsJewelryAndBricABrac.com
What? Who the hell is going to remember that? If they do remember it, good luck on them spelling it correctly! A 6 word domain name… LongsJewelry.com would make sense! ChicagoJeweler.com would make sense, GreatJewelry.com makes sense etc.
I’m sure it’s a fine business and they offer very nice jewels, but if you are a Jeweler, you also may not hold great knowledge of the internet and how it works! This domain name proves it.
In a shocking turn of events, the new jewelry store didn’t only want an online jewelry store, they want to blog about jewelry and it’s products as well. This is a wise choice.
Site number two (blog) and a different domain name this time.
SpeakingOfJewelry.com
Now how in the world can the same person pick such a crappy domain name for their jewelry store site and then do a 180 and pick such a better domain for the blog!
Now having a blog is a good idea to connect with your customers, but I personally think it is not a good idea to separate them! More traffic to ONE site is better then having two sites with OK traffic.
Keeping the blog and site on the same domain using a Sub-Domain like blog.domainname.com or even using a category like domainname.com/blog will help. You can also use a domain like SpeakingOfJewelry.com to promote your blog and use 301 Redirection domain forwarding to blog.yourdomainname.com so it’s easy for your customers to find it.
If you are unsure about picking a domain name that will Benefit you in many ways, it is always best to ask somebody that has great knowledge of the internet and domain names! A webmaster is not always the answer to this.
Use the power of the internet and read Domain Name related blogs or sites. You can always hire a domain name consultant as well.
