Back in March I talked about hand registering the domain name BlowUpDoll.org and I wanted to do a mini-site development on it for a couple reasons. Well, about 3 months have passed and I wanted to share a few results. Here is what I wrote back in March about why I wanted to do what I did:
" I wanted to try another little test today when I noticed a domain name in the PendingDelete drops today. Why was it different than what I normally pick up? I never went for a .org PendingDelete domain before but I did today. BlowUpDoll.org is the domain and I put a site up on it right away this morning. I consider it an $8.02 test and well worth playing around and see what happens.
There are some interesting things I want to test and this is why
BlowUpDoll.com and BlowUpDoll.net are parked… so BlowUpDoll.org is the lone of the top 3 TLD’s as a developed site with real products and prices on it! Will it get direct navigation? I’m not sure but I will find out.
Google shows NO love towards adult related term. What do I mean? They do not suggest search terms like normal terms and no results are displayed unless you click enter. I’m not sure if this is good or bad, but I will find out.
A blogspot site ranks # 1 for the search term (blow-up-doll.blogspot.com) and NO domains in the top 10, contain the search term in the domain at all. I think one should rank well with an exact match that is developed.
Good exact search results. According to GAKT 49,500 exact global phrase/ 27,100 exact local phrase & 12,100 exact global / 6,600 exact local + blowup doll gets 4,400/2,900 and 1,300/720"
3 months after the above statement:
Google Rank
I got the site ranking in the natural #5 spot on Google.com in my region as of checking today. Not bad for a .org, hand registered 3 months ago, out of 3.4 Million results!

I built the site on the morning of March 18, 2011 (My Birthday) in about 1.5hrs and have not touched it since. I used PhpZon that has Amazon products and I also mixed in some products from Bachelorette.com’s affiliate program.
Sales/Revenue
I have only made 1 sale with the Bachelorette program that earned $3.93
Amazon.com is a different story! This month alone 10 have been sold so far but only $10.17 commission on those.
Last month I sold 6 total via Amazon for $5.80 in commission.
$19.90 total commissions in basically the past 60 days. Not the best, but considering I paid $8.02 for the domain and spent about 1.5 hours 3 months ago and haven’t done anything since.. it’s not bad. Since the domain is ranking pretty well now, I expect the sales to keep coming in!
I think I proved a couple things with this test. .org product domains CAN rank well for an exact match term, even at Google with the suggest search off due to it being an adult related term. Affiliate commissions are not that great on these items but the site has turned a profit in less than 3 months.
Traffic
It has been pretty good and basically all is coming from search. I have 23 search terms that rank fairly well in Google, with the biggest one being the exact match that has produced over 400 clicks the past 30 days on 10,000 impressions according to Google Webmasters stats.

Own Search Terms And Build Multiple Sites
I will admit that I am not the "best owner" for a site like this! PriveCo is! What do I mean? PriveCo is the owner of Bachelorette.com, Vibrators.com, BachelorettPartyDolls.com etc. Why did I mention that last domain? Because PriveCo owns it and they rank #5 just about BlowUpDoll.org . Owning a domain name of a product they sell (Blow Up Dolls) and building a little mini-site on it can be very effective in moving product and "owning" the search results for a term. There is no limit to how many domain names / sites a company can own and there is no reason for your company not to own related domains to products or services you offer and at least pop up mini-sites relating to them to rank in search engines. So if PriveCo purchased BlowUpDoll.org from me, they would "own" 2 of the top 6 natural spots on Google for that search term, a product they offer. Make sense? No reason it can’t be done with more domains / mini-sites to own all of the 10 spots!
Side notes: Yahoo hasn’t shown any love to the BlowUpDoll.org site but has indexed the home page.. just not on the first several pages I looked. Bing has done the same as Yahoo.

I like sheep blow up doll very nice.

Yahoo/Bing are all about number of backlinks. Buy a few $5 backlink jobs on Fiverr and you’ll be on Yahoo’s first page in no time.

Good share!Personally i got motivated by your work..Have lot of domains sitting idle in my account.Would definitely dust them up & build into mini-sites.
Once again, thanks for your ideas & experiences

Great case study. Interesting that you haven’t put adsense on the site. Amazon only has a 24hr cookie if I remember correctly but there are ways to increase your commission quickly if you google it.
I thought “hand reg” meant doing a domain search and checking availability and not snapping a dropping domain that was already registered prior to the drop.
Jamie Zoch
@Wilner,
I thought AdSense wasn’t allowed on adult? As for the “hand reg”, technically it was a hand reg. It dropped from the registry and my dropcatching software hand registered it when it dropped.

People say minisites are dead but I really do not think so.
Trico
“So if PriveCo purchased BlowUpDoll.org from me…”
Would you trade the domain for your very own sexy Blow Up Doll?
Jamie Zoch
@Trico,
If it was coated in 24k gold. LOL I listed the domain for $675 when I grabbed it and now that it has gained value due to traffic and the Google page 1 rank, $675 is a really good deal. Maybe I should raise the price

Thanks for sharing the numbers.

Our continual .org domain sales of product/service exact match domains have led me to this same conclusion…a lot of people we’ve sold some to come back to buy more, and I know some of them are getting the domains purely for developing small sites to try and get rankings and make some ongoing revenues, so the domains must be working out for them.
Good post, Jamie!
Domain Name Reserve
Exact match .Org’s are on par with .Net in their ranking boost and way ahead of every other TLD except .com from our findings | Thanks for sharing.

Try outranking amazon and Google images and you’ll do some more sales. Also ranking it on Blow Up Dolls and Sex Dolls etc will do well. Some links will do wonders. Good luck!
