I have been following the Pizzerias.com domain name after it grabbed my attention at GoDaddy Auctions when it had a lot of attention and when the smoke cleared, 82 bids were placed in the domain name auction and Pizzerias.com ended for $20,105 USD in an expired domain name auction.
It isn’t often a GoDaddy Aucitons expired domain name reaches the $20K mark, so I was interested to hear who the buyer was and what they had planned with the domain, so I contacted them to here what there plans were.
What do domaining and pizzerias have in common? "More than we would have thought" laughed Maz Ghani and Ron Santos, co founders of Pizzerias.com. When we started domaining about 3 years ago our main interest was in domain investing and resale. When Pizzerias.com became available at auction we knew we had a real gem. We initially considered reselling this name but the more we thought about it the more we became convinced that it was a site that should be developed. It is, after all, a category domain and is very specific to the niche market we are partnering with.
After some market and demographic research, we formed a company, hired website developers and launched a site that sells discounted gift certificates online nationwide. Customers get a great deal at participating pizzerias and pizzerias benefit by receiving free advertising as well as revenue sharing.
We just came back from the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas. It was an amazing experience and we met several entrepeneurs who have also developed domain names into Pizza-related websites. I think we learned more about pizza that week than we ever have!
We launched the site about six weeks ago and the response has been very encouraging. Currently, we are in the process of accelerating our marketing efforts in order to partner with more pizzerias throughout the U.S. and allow more customers to enjoy pizza and save money. Signing up is free on Pizzerias.com where you can "Eat Pizza. Save Dough."
Pizzerias.com has also started social media pages on Facebook and Twitter which you can follow them there for discounts.
Thank you to Maz and Ron for the interview and I wish them the best of luck with the new business!

It isn’t often a GoDaddy Aucitons expired domain name reaches the $20K mark, and gets paid for..
so many deadbeats on godaddy auctions lately, you would think they’d fix that

@Mike,
I think that is a general issue at all domain auction services. I think the services make it too easy for “anybody” to bid. Sedo is doing pretty well, but still a lot there as well.

I would hate to have been the person that let that name get away! I could have bought a car with that
dough.

@jamie,
