Here is one of those domain names used in marketing that makes you scratch your head. Last night (I think during the World Series) McDonalds® played a commercial for it’s Monopoly® game they are offering currently and you can play it online.
What did McDonalds use to attract people so they could easily remember the address to play the game online:
PlayAtMcd.com
I wasn’t aware that McDonalds used the acronym MCD but I guess they do.
McDonalds also owns the domain name MCD.com, so why not just use that? Currently, MCD.com simply doesn’t resolve.
All in all, not the worst domain, but I think people might get confused when they forward to a domain name that has nothing to do with McDonalds. Secondly, not sure how many people tie the MCD acronym to McDonalds.
Anyway, if you want to play the McDonalds Monopoly game online, you can visit PlayAtMCD.com which will then bring you to the web address http://monopoly.promotions.com/monopoly09/front.do . This is called domain name forwarding which allows McDonalds to send you to a Long URL that you wouldn’t remember by using a shorter, easy to remember domain name.
McDonalds partnered with the company Promotions.com to bring the Monopoly game Online the past 5 years and it has been a big hit!
Promotions.com is a marketing company and appears to use sub-domains for all of it’s projects they work with companies on. Just like the monopoly.promotions.com URL, kraft.promotions.com/toblerone and other current promotions they are running.
I can understand why Promotions.com wants to keep stuff on their servers, but if it were me running the promotion, I’d want the "Promotion" on my main domain / servers.. For McDonalds, I would want the game on McDonalds.com and not feeding Promotions.com a bunch of traffic! This also allows people to browse around on your site and not "Promotions.com". You are paying for the ad, take all the traffic to your site when you can.
