I wanted to do one more of these just to make sure my first reportings were correct. If you missed the previous reports, I took random domains reported on DnJournal.com for AfternicDLS and wanted to see Who owned the domain before they were sold. The reason behind me doing this, was because I rarely get offers on my domains on Afternic. Afternic always has the highest amout of reported sales on DNJ, so I wanted to see if others (members) were selling domains at Afternic or if the domains happened to be owned by Afternic/BuyDomains themself.

As I write this, I have not checked a single domain yet, so I will be checking as I go. Personally, I still think Afternic/BuyDomains offers it’s "own" domains before a member listed domain and from my last two reports, the numbers say the same thing…. Keep in mind Afternic owns about 850K domains and the total number of domains listed on Afternic is in the 3 Million range. This means 2.15 Million member listed domains, compared to 850K Afternic owned domains. By these numbers, Members would have the advantage.

30 House, 5 Member. 85% House Advantage.

Out of 35 total domains, 30 domains were owned by Afternic (house) with 5 being owned by Members. This comes to 85% of the domains reported sold by AfternicDLS were owned by themself. This is an improvment for "Members" since the first time I did a report like this when the number was at 96.5% for the house. The second report I did came in at 92% for the house.

A slow improvment since the first report in late June, so I hope to see this number getting a little closer to 50/50. Plus I hope to see some offers, which has not been happening for me.

In your opinion, where is the bet place to put a domain up for sale? Also, have you paid for the enhanced listing features at Afternic or Sedo and have they made a difference?

    **Jamie Says**
    Hello Kelly,
I think “more” is better when listing any domain for sale. By more, I mean listing domains for sale every place you can. Sedo.com & Afternic.com are the two main ones. If you are parking your domain, have a For Sale contact link on that page. List domains for sale in forums and not only Domain Forums. Have a personal site with your domains for sale etc. Create Banners with specific domains and post that on sites you own

I personally have not paid for promoting my domains at either Afternic or Sedo as I do not think it’s worth it, but many times it will greatly help your cause if you pay for some kind of promotion for your domain for sale. I wouldn’t highlight a domain for sale on a “domain” type site if I were to do it, unless it was a “domain” type domain. If I were to promote one domain right now, I would buy a banner spot on an industry specific site that matched my domain. On that domain, I would do a mini site with info on that specific domain, info on how to purchase etc.
    Hope this helps some.

Good research and I believe your argument that Afternic doesn’t give members “equal marketing exposure” is legit. What can be frustrating for a domainer is to see the sale of a domain on DNJournal, realize that in your inventory you hold what is a comparable or better quality and/or lower priced domain and wonder why the other domain was chosen. Marketing???

    **Jamie Says**
I couldn’t agree more Leonard. I have KidsCards.com listed on Afternic and Afternic sold KidsCard.com (owned by them) for around $2,500. No contact on my domain at all and I was taking offers at $750. I also think KidsCards.com is a better domain then KidsCard.com So that is some proof that it does happens.

Your domain, KidsCards.com, is listed at $3,850 which is 50% higher than the domain that sold.

KidsCard.com was sold to a BuyDomains customer. Since you’ve listed KidsCards.com on Expanded Promotion, both names would have appeared in the same screens for our sales executive. I’m confident that your domain was mentioned to our customer. Our sales team is compensated the same way for NameMedia’s names and for our members names.

We created the price floor as an expanded promotion tool to help members increase the probability of sale. It allows you to set the negotiation parameters for our sales executives. I see since KidsCard.com sold, you have added a floor. That will help us sell your domains.

We’ll try to reach out to the buyer again about KidsCards.com

    Thanks,
    Adam

Thank you Adam. I did take your advice and placed buy it now prices on all my domains, which was around the time of the KidsCard.com sale. I also placed all my domains in a category. Also, wouldn’t 50% higher be $5K? KidsCard.com sold for $2,500.

$750 (my starting offer price) is still much lower then the $2,500 paid, but I was never contacted, so I was a little suprised at that. Buy it now or not, $750 is much more attractive then $2,500. One would think it’s worth a shot to offer the $750 on the better domain imo.

“I mean listing domains for sale every place you can. Sedo.com & Afternic.com are the two main ones.”

“I did take your advice and placed buy it now prices on all my domains,”

    Jamie,

If you place ‘Buy It Now’ prices doesn’t that preclude your strategy of listing your domains at many sales venues?
    —-
“Your domain, KidsCards.com, is listed at $3,850 which is 50% higher than the domain that sold.”

    “wouldn’t 50% higher be $5K? KidsCard.com sold for $2,500.”

    Jamie,

$2,500 to $5,000 would be doubling the amount which means it’s a 100% markup.

For 50% markup of $2,500, you would take half of $2,500 ($1,250) and add it to the $2,500 base
    ($1,250 & $2,500) to get $3,750.

    So Adam’s figure was correct.

    Patrick
