Since ICANN put in the new rules on domain name tasting it has been pretty interesting to watch things change in the Pending Delete domain name drop process.
A very short time ago the average joe domainer couldn’t dream of even touching a crap domain name during the PD drop. 100% of .com & .net domain names would get grabbed by domain name tasters taking advantage of the AGP (added grace period) which was put in place to allow for people that made a mistake (typo) to return the domain name in 96 hours from registration and get a refund.
Owning a registrar allowed you to dump as many domain names you wanted Back during the AGP and get full refunds. Many registrars made it easy for customers to do the same thing but for a small fee of around 25 cents. This allowed people to grab domains that were already tasted and continue the process even longer.
The number of domain names being tasted each day was HUGE and the process went over and over again.
Now the AGP is different and only allows registrars to return a very small percentage of domain names based on the % that is registered. This still needs to be in place as people register domain names with BS credit cards etc. so it’s in place so registrars do not get burned on those situation.
Most, if not all registrars clearly removed the features that allowed customers to get a refund as well.
So how is this new AGP rule working?
According to TasteReports.com which did and still does track the major domain registrars of new registrations and deletions… It’s Working!
Nearly every registrar is in the 95% + for "Kept" domain names for what was registered for a specific day. Many are even at the 100% mark.
TasteReports.com is also a pretty cool FREE tool that allows you to see what people are registering each day and is split up by registrar. There is a 48 hour delay in the reports on the site due to the zone file rules of only 1 download per day, but all the data is as fresh as it can be and displayed on the site for free, for you to check out.

Good riddance. As a web publisher/developer AND domainer, I can see it from both sides.
I believe people should be able to BUY domains for any purpose, but old “policy” simply allowed major abuses of the system.

Very cool info. Thanks! Something is up as I don’t remember ever seeing this many “traffic” domains going through GoDaddy in a given week. There are over a hundred names on the expiring list that receive over 1,000 UV a month – including RiverMonsters.com (who ever would let that drop with the new Animal Planet show and all??) It should be an interesting week of auctions!

RiverMonsters.com somehow expired, was sold at 2 expired auctions twice, and was incredibly picked back up by the original owner. I don’t know how Animal Planet will get RiverMonsters.com as the domain was regged in 2007 and the series aired in 2009. Will be very interesting on how it all works out with series 2 of River Monsters airing on April 25th. BTW the owner of RiverMonsters.com owns RiverMonster.com
