I came across this great use of a domain name by the Avon® brand company yesterday. In the advertisement that spoke about selling the Avon brand and making extra money, they used the call-to-action domain name SellAvon.com .
Wow! Does that make total sense on getting there message across or what!
Not only is Avon running this ad during a perfect time to look for new sales represenatives to sell it’s product due to so many losing there jobs recently and simply being short on cash, but they knocked it out of the park with the domain name they choose to use in it’s ad.
It may seem simple after the fact by looking at the domain name, but so many companies fail when it comes to using a clear call-to-action domain name in marketing!
Congrats goes out to Avon for using a Clear, Make Sense domain name!
Now a couple things the common folk may miss….
Avon uses the SellAvon.com domain name in advertising, but if or when somebody visits the site, you may notice the URL (domain name) changes to YourAvon.com.
This is called domain forwarding or also URL Redirection.
It can be used for a couple reasons. In this case it is being used for Two reasons.
1.) The clear message the domain name carries all by itself. The domain name fits the main message carried out in the advertisement.
2.) Tracking. Tracking can be hard to do when advertising on TV to see how effective your ad is. Avon is a large company and get’s web traffic from all over the place etc. but SellAvon.com is likely a newly used domain name that would hold little to no traffic from before. Running the ad with this specific domain name allows for easy tracking on this specific ad as well. Using URL Redirection via your hosting company allows you to track traffic data to the specific domain used.
A very common mistake made when it comes to domain names and somebodies "main" site… they think they can only use one domain name. This is not true as you can use domain forwarding and really forward as many domains as you wish to one domain. This can be done if you own common typo domain names of your company name or products, other specific product names, generic names of your product or service, call-to-action domains used in advertising or domain names that simply get a good deal of natural traffic.
