I had noticed a decent sized group of "Blog" related domain names sell over at Afternic. Each domain name sold for $1,500 each, with the domain names being as follows:

AstrologyBlogs.com
CaliforniaBlogs.com
BoxingBlog.com
FinancingBlog.com
LawyerBlogs.com
PsychologyBlogs.com
ContestBlog.com
BibleBlogs.com
EconomyBlog.com
RacingBlogs.com

Those 10 domain names totaled $15,000. Two other "blog" related sales over at Afternic late last week also include:

RecipeBlogs.com $2,000

DesignBlogs.com $550

I like the blog keyword, but I am not as much of a fan for the plural term Blogs. Singular versions allow for just what the domain says. For an example, EconomyBlog.com pretty much allows the site to talk about anything to do with the economy and be relevant to the domain name.

With the plural term Blogs, I personally think the owner is pretty much forced into making a Directory site of related blogs or an aggregator style site to the specific keyword. This is not always a bad thing and done correctly can be profitable, but I think a specific blog offers move value then a group of blogs gathered in one place to make a directory.

Personally in the group of sold domains above, I think EconomyBlog.com holds about the highest shot at being the winner and is the best domain of the group. The economy is a very hot topic right now and will always be. Lots of stuff to write on that topic, with a huge amount of advertisers and affiliate programs.

According to whois records, a company called "Bloggy Network", Jacob Gower appears to have purchased the domains.

Congrats to the sellers of the domains and the buyers Bloggy Network.

    totally agree…imo the plural names don’t have a “ring” to them and even as a directory they just don’t sound professional.

    A made up name like boxingaddicts.com could do the same as boxingblogs.com…neither would have typein traffic either.

    Decent “blog” names drop nearly everyday. Anymore geos you found other than CaliforniaBlogs.com? I wonder if Elliot ever sold TexasBlog.com… I don’t pick any of these up myself, but have been tempted at times… I let PracticalBlog.com drop a couple weeks ago…

    I have a ___blog.com auction set up at BIDO later this week and have submitted a few ___blog.net domains waiting for votes. I’m sure I’m not the only domainer that sees these bulk purchases of similar names for nice prices and wonders why they never seem to find yours :)

    EconomyBlog and BoxingBlog are best.
    That is good they sold for so much. Impressive.

    @Steve,
    I think EconomyBlog.com sold pretty cheap. That one could be resold and turn a profit IMO. BoxingBlog.com is nice as well, but I think at $1,500 is a fair price.

    @Jason,
    Well, as well know “decent” and “good” are two different sides of the coin ;) . The good ones sell, the decent ones often do not. CaliforniaBlogs.com was the only GEO that I saw. TexasBlog.com is still in Elliots name according to whois. I think in order for “blog” related domains to be good, they need to start with a strong keyword. MoneyBlog, MarketingBlog etc.

    The .blog is good for a single site, but the .blogs have been good as an aggregator site. I purchased http://www.FoodBlogs.com, http://www.MomBlogs.com and http://www.MommyBlogs.com and developed them into aggregator websites. Traffic is steadily growing, and each day I receive several requests from food bloggers and mom bloggers to add their blogs to the sites. I get type-in traffic for both.

    @Lance,
    The sites look nice but I am sure with any aggregator site, it is harder to make money with as I think it is much easier to make money directly with a blog. Blogs can and do rank well in SE’s, which allows for Direct Marketing. Aggregator sites basically have the “home page” to make money, maybe a newsletter and that is about it. The sites do look useful but as developers and domain owners, it is only “fun” for a little bit having developed sites but cash is king and is needed to stay alive.

    Aggregator names are actually trickier to monetise. The only plus is type in traffic.

    Lance – why add them to your site? Aren’t the competitors to your blog?

    As the purchaser of the domains, there were a couple that made the package deal worth it, specifically with economyblog ,financingblog, and contestblog.com. I can make my money back 10 fold within a year of developing.

    I also like *blog.com domains much better in terms of value, but, the solution I already have built for *blogs.com domains takes me 1/10th the time to maintain and 1/10th the cost to run.

    @Jacob,
    Thank you for stopping by and posting your comment. I had kind of thought it could of been a package deal and with the domains you stated included, was a package you couldn’t pass up. Congrats again on the purchases. If you feel like sharing any more details, please feel free. (how you came about finding the domains, did you place the offer directly on Afternic, how was it working with Afternic etc.)
