It was announced on 9/22/2010 of a voluntary recall of Similac Infant Forumula by Abbott Laboratories but unlike many of the companies that do a recall of a product, Abbott Laboratories has went ahead and registered the vital matching keywords to what people will be naturally searching for on the web! Similac + Recall. It is important to do this for many reasons as the domain name can greatly assist a company to direct consumers to an easy to find location that makes sense to the situation like SimilacRecall.com . The domain name simply makes sense, plus that will be what people will be searching for on search engines like Google and Yahoo so it can help your site rank well for the matching term.

The recall was announced on 9-22-2010 and Abbott once again did something right! They registered the domain name BEFORE the recall was made public and registered the domain on 9/21/10 according to DomainTools.com whois history.

SimilacRecall.com Registered By Abbott Laboratories

So the bad? They are not even doing anything with it currently! Yeah, I know.. its only been a couple days since they registered it but it only takes a couple minutes and forward the domain name to the web page they are currently using to provide information to the general public about the infant formula recall of the most popular infant formula brand Similac, but they are not. Instead, in press releases they are telling people to visit Similac.com/recall which actually forwards to the web address http://abbott.vo.llnwd.net/o18/similac/recall/default.htm Link. The domain name SimilacRecall.com itself simply doesn’t resolve at all and adding www.SimilacRecall.com currently only resolves to my local ISP search page.

They are doing a forward redirect with Similac.com/recall … they should be doing the same with the domain name SimilacRecall.com other than nothing.

Abbott also registered the .org domain name and that also doesn’t resolve.

Johnson & Johnson did the same thing with TylenolRecall.com . They own the domain name, but simply do not "help" with it and at least forward visitors to the domain name to a location where information is available. TylenolRecall.com simply doesn’t resolve either.

It is very likely that when a company registers a domain name like brandname+recall like SimilacRecall.com and simply do nothing with the domain name, it is solely for Brand Protection. That is a good idea, but at least use the domain to forward to a page with information on one of your companies websites to inform people!

Sadly, I have 3 cans of the recalled formula that we started stocking up for our baby that is due in December.
