During one of my daily checks of Google Trends, I noticed some pretty hot trends for the term "Cookie Diet". At first thought… I was like, cookies are good but add in the term "diet" with cookies and I was thinking of the cardboard box they come in and pictured taking a bite out of that and the taste associated with the cookies!

OK, back to the more interesting things here! So I did a Google search for cookie diet… the page 1 results on Google are pretty interesting if you were to really look into them like I did!

Dr. Siegal’s® owns and uses the exact match domain name CookieDiet.com and holds the number 1 rank on Google. Ranking # 2 goes to Smart For Life® and their cookie diet on the domain SmartForLife.com .

Moving down to the number 3 spot is CookieDietOnline.com which was once the main domain for the site that is now CookieDiet.com and Dr. Siegal’s company. They kept the site up and appear to have built a new one on the better domain CookieDiet.com . The meta description on Google explains this but I personally would change that meta, since it already holds a P 1 # 3 spot for the important keyword term, that could potentially go to somebody else if they stop using the site. Keep in mind, searchers read that meta and what they have now… will drive people NOT to click it! This in return will lower traffic to the domain and.. likely drop it’s ranking lower and lower.

Anyway…..

Two ABC.com news stories hold spots 4 & 5

Onto spot # 6… (after the two ABC.com news stories that cover CookieDiet.com and Dr Siegal) is the domain name, TheCookieDiet.com… different meta description than the first three rankings, but TheCookieDiet.com domain is actually owned by SmartForLife.com and is a matching site to the SmartForLife.com domain. (aka the # 2 ranking site)!

So if you lost track, two companies basically own all of the top 6 listings (minus 2 news stories) so far and they are going back and forth ranking wise…!

Wikipedia drops in for the # 7 ranking but Dr. Siegal and Smart For Life are not done just yet with there take over of Page 1 for the cookie diet search term…..

Coming in at # 8 is a new domain into the mix again with CookieDietTips.com . Who owns it? Smart For Life again! Different meta again then other Smart For Life domains already used and this time a totally different looking site then the other higher ranking ones they already have (spots #2, #6 and now #8) but still includes the all important "cookie diet" in the domain, which isn’t a must but clearly can help.

Coming in at spot # 9 is Dr. Siegal’s again with DrSiegal.com on a different site but still putting focus on the cookie diet!

In total, 6 of the 9 top spots on Google.com for the search term cookie diet are held by two companies using 6 different domain names, with 4 of them holding the exact match search term cookie diet in them but still each site putting their focus on there main product, cookie diet! This clearly increases both companies chances at getting a searcher to click in and helps keep competition lower on page 1 of Google but strong competition between the two of them to hold there top spots they already have!

This is a great example that companies can use more than 1 domain name for your site (and have more than 1 site) products or services that you offer! Search engine rankings are very important and adding other sites to fight for your all important keyword(s) people are looking for, can help you get more of that traffic! The more top spots you have in search engines, the better and more likely you will get clicks! Having and using several domain names and similar sites, SEO work and more can help you achieve this.
