The internet is run by keywords! People visit specific websites based on the terms in it’s domain name or simply remember the site because of the keyword(s) used in the domain. People search for something based on keywords at search engines. This can be one keyword (term) or many keywords together (phrase).
Fact: Did you know the average search query performed on Google is 4 words!
86% of clicks on Google are from Natural Rankings, with 14% from Paid Advertisers!
- You may or may not read an article you see on the internet based on keywords used in the title.
- You may or may not read an email due to the keywords used in a subject line.
- You may read news based on specific keywords set using tools like Google Alerts.
- You may find tweets on Twitter based on keywords, geographical keywords or the keyword of a specific user.
- You may track news stories based on your brand or competition based on keywords.
- You search for an item you wish to purchase based on keywords
The simple fact is, the internet is powered by Keywords!
Your internet advertising costs are based on keywords picked and I guess the list can go on and on and on about keywords! One thing I know for sure is that you need to be aware of keywords you are using.
Website owners need to be the most aware.
My neighbor said to me the other day, "I was looking for a specific part on the internet but I was amazed that nobody was selling it, because I need one and wanted to buy it."
The first thing that I said, "People are selling it, but just do not understand the power of the internet and keywords".
It is very likely that my neighbor is and will not be the only one looking for that specific part! The one company that figures out the internet is all about keywords, they will list that part with the specific keywords people search for and will sell A Lot of those parts!
Websites may already be offering the specific part, but simply lack the knowledge of keywords and where to put them so the customer can find them.
It still amazes me the amount of companies that are simply Not Online! No website, no Twitter account, nada! Some are online but the sites are so poor, it’s almost like not being online because the function is so poor.
Many site owners simply leave off the basics like store hours, when that is all the customer was looking for, which would still allow them to be a paying customer if provided.
Website owners that offer a functional website which can be very basic but still functional, while putting extreme focus on keywords that people are searching for will Sell Product!
Master keywords are important, niche and long-tail keywords will set you apart while offering something different then the others will bring success!
There are a lot of people in this world (nearly 7 Billion) and a lot of them are looking for something you are offering. It’s your job to match those keywords and deliver.
Not sure what people are searching for? Put a focus on your niche and use helpful tools like Google Adwords Keyword Tool, Google’s Search Based Keyword Tool, Google Wonder Wheel which shows related searches to a keyword term which you can keep breaking down by niche. Last but not least, use Common Sense!

Great post, it has been amazing getting out and talking to businesses about keywords, etc. Once they think about how they use the Internet it all starts to make sense to them. They also realize that they have been ripped off by developers charging them way to much money for a site that keyword optimization was never even a thought while it was being developed.
Whether it be the domain name or search, small business and large businesses alike that understand how they use the Internet daily will be the most successful with their online presence.

@Bruce,
I always get a kick out of talking with people about the internet in general. The majority have little to no clue. Sadly, a lot of educating is needed, but we all keep pressing on and it will happen or at least improve.
