I am a big fan of using a For Sale link on a domain name parking page. The one thing I was never a fan of was the options to where or what that for sale link provided to the interested party once clicked. Well… that was until today doing some playing around.

I park my domain names with Fabulous.com but this should work for other parking providers like Parked.com as well or any that allow URL redirection when clicking a for sale link. With Fabulous.com, the For Sale image is Big and Clear that the domain is for sale. Visit PimpMyPad.com to see what I mean if you would like. You can also click the for sale image to see the tip explained below. (keep in mind I have over 500 domains doing this, and it works for each specific domain)

If you have your domain name parked with Fabulous.com and you have it marked For Sale, the system (on the back end) gives you two options for what happens if somebody clicks the for sale image/link:

  • Fabulous offer email forwarding
  • Redirection URL

The Fabulous offer email forwarding gives the interested party a small form to fill out. Name, Email, Offer amount and Comment. This then is sent to your email address you have on file at Fabulous.

Redirection URL allows you to put in a URL where you would like to send the interested party that clicks the For Sale link.

Here is the tip!

I had always thought I could only send the interested party to ONE specific location with the link based on the URL that I put in for the Redirection URL, so I never used it. (using this option only allows putting in One link for all domains listed for sale) With today’s discovery, all you need is one link!

Before I thought I could only put a link like http://www.exampledomain.com/forsale . The problem with doing this for me, is because it would not send the interested party to the EXACT Domain that was for sale or the domain they were interested in. (unless you only have one domain for sale)

What I discovered is using the coded %domain% in the URL you put in place, will match the domain name for the specific parked page the user landed on and input that domain name into your URL where you put %domain% in the Redirection URL option Fabulous.com offers.

Example: If I want to send an interested party that clicks on the for sale link on my parked page to the Specific listing page for that domain name of my Sedo.com listed domain, I put in the URL like this:

http://sedo.com/search/details.php4?domain=%domain%&tracked=&partnered=33366&language=us

Now clearly you would need to have All your parked domains listed on Sedo for this to work for all your parked and marked for sale domains.

If I wanted to send my interested parties that click the For Sale link on one of my parked pages to the specific domain I have listed with Afternic.com I would put in the URL like this:

https://www.afternic.com/name.php?domain=%domain%&ref_id=108161

Now you will notice I included my affiliate numbers, so you can change those or remove them for when or if you use this system.

You can do this if you have a personal for sale site set up and display each domain on a specific URL and so on.

Basically, by putting in the %domain% code, will replace that with the specific domain name for the parked page the user lands on if they click the for sale link.

Using a system like this really allows a domain name seller the best of both worlds. You can still get PPC and with the clear for sale link and allowing you to decide where to send the interested party is Great!

Again, I was aware of this Redirection option before, I just did not know you could put Code into the URL you used so the interested parties can land at a specific destination you want like a Sedo Listing page or Afternic Listing page for the Specific Domain!

I am personally setting up a little system that will allow me to do this and include a Contact style form for a user to submit, but also include links directly to my Sedo and Afternic listing pages for the specific domain name they visited. This will allow the user to have Several Options to use.

How to set this up or change it via your Fabulous.com account.

  • Log in at Fabulous.com
  • Click Sell/Buy tab
  • Click Account Settings
  • Under Legacy, select Redirection URL and input the URL you would like.
  • Click Apply Changes
  • Click Yes (or save)

Be sure to change the URL so you have the %domain% code in place where the normal domain name would be in the URL. If you are unsure what URL to use, simply do a search for a specific domain using the service you want and replace the Domain Name in the URL with %domain% .

Side Note: You must have the domain name listed with the Parking Service, Sedo, Afternic or wherever you want your visitors to end up at for this to work.

I hope this helps you, as I know it will help me Greatly. I will play around with this a little and see if using Sedo or Afternic works better then one or the other as well as the new little system I am setting up.

Great tip Jamie. I had written a PHP script that looked at the HTTP_REFERRER (referring URL) to determine the domain, however, this did not work if someone had referring URLs turned off in their browser.

To extend on your idea one step further, rather than redirecting to Sedo you could redirect to your own offer system so that you aren’t automatically taking a 10% commission on your sales.

Thank you Terrell. You may have missed a little what I wrote because I got long winded and wanted to make sure I explained it as well as I could, but I did include the following text:

If the interested party uses the Contact Form, then it would allow me to avoid the 10%, yes, but I am not worried about the 10% as I think it helps “close the deal” when using a 3rd party service.
