The Discount Tire Co. clearly "Get’s It" when it comes to domain names. Discount Tire Company owns the category killer domain name Tires.com!
Not Goodyear®, not BFgoodrich®, not Firestone® not Dunlop® and not Michelin®. Why? You tell me.. but I would have to say they don’t "get it" and Discount Tire does!
What’s short, catchy, descriptive and screams what you offer and allows nearly instant access to your customers?
Tires.com
Discount Tire Company has owned Tires.com since at least 2001 according to Whois. As an auto racing fan, it’s only recently that I have noticed Discount Tire are advertising with the domain Tires.com instead of using it’s longer domain DiscountTire.com .

(Image Source) Discount Tire Co also happens to own DiscountTire.com and uses that for it’s main site domain. It is who they are, so I understand why they do that.
Tires.com likely uses a Frame Forward so Meta Tags can be used and forwards Tires.com to DiscountTire.com .
DiscountTire.com ranks # 1 for the natural search results on Google.com for the search term tires. Since Google.com holds 70% of the search engine volume, it is the most important to rank well at for search engines. It doesn’t rank all that great on Yahoo.com but does rank # 5 with the Tires.com domain and not DiscountTires.com at all on P1 . One thing they may consider is advertising with the Tires.com domain for the term on Yahoo.
Congratulations to David Ragan and the # 6 Discount Tire team on the win in the Nationwide Series today!

Nice article Jamie. Can you explain how Frame Forwards work? Is it better than straight domain forwarding and is it easy to implement? Is it a good domain strategy?
Thanks as always!

Hi Steve. Thank You!
I am not an expert on the Frame Forwards but I am only aware of that method to include Meta Tags (the text displayed on search engines under the Title link). So I could be wrong that it’s a Frame. This method is also called URL Redirection and Wikipedia covers A Lot on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL_redirection If a frame is used, it’s likely sever side. I also know that Search Engines do not like forwards all that much, but since Tires.com ranks on the first page of Yahoo for the term tires and shows meta, I would think the method they use may be the best option for domain forwarding. If you use a simple forward at a domain registrar, I do not think it will get indexed or hold an index at an SE.

Jamie,
I contacted Uniroyal once to buy my name:
” TireMileage.com ” but no reply.
I assume Michelin North America has all
the domain names and business it needs ??!!
I guess they will just buy another $2,000,000 advertising package for National TV.
Yep, Guess so !!

I own MyTire.com and am constantly receiveing hits to the for sale landing page from consumers who are trying to reach Mr. Tire but seem to find the domain name Mytire.com to their liking.
I Contacted Mr. Tire marketing recently but …
Like I always say “We’ll get it (meaning reward) when they get it (when it comes to the power of one or more great domain names!”
