NBC has launched a new sub site to it’s very popular TODAY program by adding a community for parenting tips, advice and news section called Today Moms.
The site hopes that others get involved by leaving comments, taking part in polls and posting pictures as well.
NBC does the "Make Sense" thing and owns the domain name TodayMoms.com and uses 301 redirection sending visitors to the "ugly and hard to remember" URL on it’s main msnbc.msn.com domain name.
The reason behind the redirection is to allow people to easily be able to find the page and remember the domain name! NBC often uses sub domains and even double sub domains to promote specific shows.
TodayMoms.com forwards to the URL http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32378536/ but many do not even notice this in the process of visiting TodayMoms.com .
Even when visiting the shows main domain name TodayShow.com, it uses 301 redirection and sends visitors to http://today.msnbc.msn.com/ .
This shows one of the simple but yet very powerful features of a domain name and sending people to a specific location very easily without creating a "whole new site".
Similar networks can be created for your site doing something similar with a domain name like CreativeMoms.com (which happens to be for sale) or simply used for a blog network of creative moms.
Using specific domain names to fit even a promotion your company is considering to run is well worth it to get your customers exactly where you want them to go. This may cost a little extra money but will provide your customers an easy way to remember and visit your site.
