It was brought to my attention that the domain name DigitialMedia.com (typo with an extra i) is currently on auction as a Pre-Release expired domain name auction on NameJet.com.

DigitalMedia.com is a great domain but with a 3rd i in the domain name after the t doesn’t make this current auction a good domain, nor the current price.

I think in this case, people are not bidding based on the Typo potential of the domain, but simply because THEY (the bidders) are missing that the domain name is a Typo.

The current bid is $3,599 USD and the auction is not over yet.

It is always a good idea to double check the domain name you are considering or currently are bidding on by doing a copy / paste of the listing at the auction service. After you have copied the domain, paste the domain into Google and simply remove the TLD and include any spaces between the keywords manually and click search. This is a little trick that I use often to double check if a domains a typo or not.

DigitialMedia.com was registered in 2008 and all other TLD’s are available. There are no signs this typo domain gets any traffic. The correct spelling DigitalMedia.com currently only shows 261 unique monthly visitors according to Compete.com and was registered in 1998 and registered with Godaddy.com.

A buyer should always use caution and double check any domain they are buying is not a typo or domain they were not expecting. This also happens with some 4 letter domains when the buyer thought it was a 3 letter domain. vv (two v’s) are though of being a w.

The following is a screen shot from somebody who is in the auction:

I’m in the auction for this one. Didn’t realize the typo; didn’t bid up either. But, I agree…. why people put this kind of money down on this type of name. Shaking my head…

You are right Jamie, many are caught on the wrong foot. People buying typos are much more matured and would find that the original name has no alexa ranking. This reminds me of people bidding on idns on Sedo. I use the same trick of copying and pasting the name without the extension in Google search to see if Google suggest me an alternative spelling. Inaddition you can also copy and paste the name in a word document(or any other document with spell checker on) and check the spelling provided the name has only dictionary words.

It baffles me that people are willing to bid that much money on an obvious typo. It sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

I’m in this auction also – price now at $5100. If you don’t know to look for the misspelling, the typo does not stick out at all.
Will be interesting to see how high the price goes and if the winner ends up paying. If they do, they will not be happy when they receive this domain.
